2010 MVFC Players of the week thread

Post by clenz »

University of Northern Iowa junior Ben Boothby was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week, and junior Tirrell Rennie was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week following their performances in the UNI season opener, the league announced Sunday.

Boothby tallied seven tackles, including 4.0 sacks, in the Panthers’ 16-9 win over #21 North Dakota State on Saturday. Boothby’s four sacks ties the UNI school record for sacks in a game, and his 4.5 tackles for loss ranks second in the UNI record books. Boothby helped the Panthers tie the school record with 11 sacks, last set in 1997.

Rennie threw for 172 yards and rushed for 96 in the Panthers’ win over the Bison.

I don't see who got offensive player of the week though...any update on that one?

The Missouri Valley Football Conference announced its weekly awards on Sunday (Sept. 12), and Missouri State quarterback Cody Kirby (Sr., Rogers, Ark.) was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Bears' game at Kansas State.

In his 32nd consecutive start Saturday, Kirby collected a career-high 333 yards of total offense in helping the Bears accumulate their highest point total against an FBS program since 2002. The senior co-captain threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions against the FBS Wildcats, while rushing for a team-high 52 yards on 10 carries. It was his highest rushing output in 7 games and the third-highest passing total of his career.

In the 48-24 loss, he engineered scoring drives of 80, 58, 74, and 99 yards. The Bears collected 447 yards of total offense in the game, while committing just one turnover.

He easily could have gone for 400+ total yards if our receivers could catch a damn ball.

For week 3

Offensive Player of the Week
QB Matt Barr, Western Illinois, Sr., Belvidere, Ill.
Barr set a Western record with 125 rushing yards (including a long of 69) on just seven carries playing three quarters. Barr also threw for 221 yards and matched a career-high of three TD passes (also set during the Sam Houston State game last year). In all he accounted for four touchdowns. It was his ninth career 200-yard game (three coming this year)

Defensive Player of the Week
LB Austin Davis, Illinois State, So., Normal, Ill.
Davis posted a double-digit tackle effort for the third-straight time this season, which helped ISU to a 24-14 victory on the road against No. 20 South Dakota State. The Normal, Ill., native record 10 tackles, including five solo stops and also recorded his first career interception against the Jackrabbits. Davis made a great diving grab of a pass broken up by fellow linebacker Josh Howe that put an end to a strong drive for SDSU early in the second quarter.

Newcomer of the Week
WR Marvon Sanders, Illinois State, Jr., Ypsilanti, Mich. (Eastern Michigan)
Sanders, a junior transfer from Eastern Michigan, set a new career high with 10 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown as ISU upended No. 20 South Dakota State, 24-14. Sanders hauled in his first touchdown pass as a Redbird in the third quarter, an 18-yard swing route that saw him break two tackles before diving across the goal line for the touchdown to give ISU a 24-0 lead at the time.

Special Teams Player of the Week
RS/RB Carlos Anderson, UNI So., Blue Springs, Mo.
Anderson took a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown against Stephen F. Austin. He totaled 179 yards on four kickoff returns. Anderson also finished with 81 yards rushing.

This week's Missouri Valley Football Conference players of the week include RB D.J. McNorton of North Dakota State; CB Brandian Ross of Youngstown State; RB Bryce Flowers of Western Illinois; and K/P Steven Fetzer of Illinois State. Each were instrumental in his team's victories this past Saturday.

Offense
RB D.J. McNorton, North Dakota State, Jr., 5-91/2, 203, Channelview (Texas) High
McNorton had a career-high 250 yards and three TDs in the 38-16 win against No. 20 South Dakota. He scored on TD runs of 1, 53 and 27 yards, while rushing 13 times for 202 yards in the second half. His previous career-high was 66 yards against Wagner in 2009. He had a career-long rush of 67 yards late in the fourth quarter. McNorton’s effort is the second best in FCS this season and the top performance in the MVFC this season.

Defense
CB Brandian Ross, Youngstown State, Sr., 6-1, 195, Richmond (Va.) Meadowbrook
Ross finished with five total tackles, two pass breakups and a key interception in the Penguins’ come-from-behind 31-28 win over No. 13 Southern Illinois. Prior to the loss, the Salukis had won 14 consecutive conference games. Ross’s interception came in the second quarter with the game tied 14. On a second-and-10 from the SIU 49, he intercepted a Chris Dieker pass and returned it 13 yards to the SIU 41. On the ensuing possession, the Guins scored to take a 21-14 lead and never trailed again.

Newcomer
RB Bryce Flowers, Western Illinois, Fr., 5-10, 205, Pittsburg (Calif.) High
Flowers rushed for a game-high 192 yards and matched a personal-high by scoring two touchdowns as Western Illinois improved to 3-1 with a 40-7 win against visiting Indiana State. He averaged 7.4 yards per carry and lost only two yards on the slippery, muddy field.

Special Teams
K/P Steven Fetzer, Illinois State, Sr., 5-11, 190, Mahomet (Ill.) Seymour High
Fetzer drove home a 39-yard game-winning field goal in double overtime to give ISU a 44-41 win over Missouri State. Fetzer also boomed a career-long 51-yard field goal in the second quarter among his three FGs for the night. And he averaged 37.8 yards per punt in four tries with one pinned at the MSU two-yard line.

This week's MVFC players of the week are WR Jermaine Saffold of Missouri State, DB Andre Martin of UNI, and S Luke Thuston and RB Shariff Harris of Southern Illinois. Saffold helped the Bears to an upset of No. 20 Youngstown State, while Thuston and Harris helped lead the Dawgs to a win at No. 19 Illinois State. Martin's efforts helped the Panthers climb into a first-place tie in league play.

Offensive Player of the Week
WR Jermaine Saffold, Missouri State, Jr., 6-1, 205, WR, Grandview, Mo.
Saffold recorded career highs in receptions (9) and receiving yards (114) to help guide the Bears past No. 20 Youngstown State on Saturday. Saffold's 43-yard reception from Cody Kirby with 3:33 to go in the game, put the victory on ice as he notched his third touchdown in four games. His impressive afternoon included one touchdown, giving him scores in three of the Bears' four games this season. His 114 yards was the most by any MSU receiver since Clay Harbor's 171-yard game at Western Illinois on Oct. 17, 2009, and his nine receptions is the most by a Bear this season and highest total by an MSU player since Harbor notched 11 catches at Southern Illinois on Nov. 14, 2009.

Defensive Player of the Week
DB Andre Martin, UNI, So., 6-1, 203, St. Louis, Mo.
Andre Martin came up with two interceptions and forced a fumble in UNI’s 24-14 win over South Dakota State. Martin’s first pick came late in the fist half. With SDSU threatening to score at the UNI seven, Martin intercepted the ball in the endzone to send UNI into the break with a 7-0 lead. Martin’s second pick came in the third quarter with the Panthers protecting a 14-7 lead. The sophomore came up with a pass from Kyle Minett in the endzone to stop the SDSU drive. Martin also finished the game with eight tackles.

Special Teams Player of the Week
S Luke Thuston, Southern Illinois, Fr., 5-11, 185, Wildwood, Mo.
Redshirt freshman Luke Thuston blocked his second punt in as many games, only this time he returned it eight yards for a touchdown. Last week at Youngstown State, Thuston’s blocked punt led to a 38-yard Taylon Hunter return for a touchdown. Thuston also made his first career start at safety, and he had three tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss of six yards, his first fumble recovery, one pass breakup, the one blocked punt and one quarterback hurry.

Newcomer of the Week
RB Shariff Harris, Southern Illinois, Jr., 6-1, 200, Newark, N.J.
Shariff Harris rushed 37 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns to help No. 23 Southern Illinois snap a three-game losing streak. This was Harris’ first career 100-yard rushing game and he helped SIU rack up 342 yards on the ground as a team in the 38-17 win over No. 19 Illinois State. His 37 carries tied for the 10th most in a game in school history and is the third most by a player in the nation this year. Despite his large workload, Harris got better as the game went along. 109 of his 163 yards came in the second half and he rushed 13 times for 78 yards in the fourth quarter alone. His two touchdowns came in the final 12 minutes of the game to help SIU pull away from the Redbirds, who trailed by just seven entering the fourth quarter. He averaged 4.4 yards per rush on the day.
