No Chance For JMU to host a playoff game(s) in 2010

Post by BDKJMU »

From todays' daily News Record (its been a pain in the arse to post articles since they went to subscription last yr, but here is the beginning of it):

"When James Madison's football team holds practices at the University of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute this spring, the players would be smart to take a good look around. They might be back on one of those campuses for the Division I-AA playoffs.

JMU athletic director Jeff Bourne said Thursday the school will most likely not be able to host any possible playoff games this season because of construction at Bridgeforth Stadium.

"We'll wait for the final analysis from our construction company, but I would think it's very doubtful," Bourne said.

Bourne said the school would look into hosting a game at another area college. He cited U.Va., VMI and Shenandoah University in Winchester as possibilities........."

Well, to be fair, with it still between Dudzik and Thorpe at QB and now with Moats gone, this may be happening at the best time - there may not be any playoffs to worry about this year again for JMU, especially that of the hosting kind.

Well, I don't think things are quite that bleak, especially given the expanded playoff field. However, I don't get too worked up over this because in 2008 we had an opportunity to host for the first time in well over a decade. So, it's not like hosting a playoff game is something we're accustomed to or expect.

How will this look if JMU is good enough to be seeded? A seeded team on the road in the first round? That's insane....

Agree about it not being bleak. Still have 15 starters back.
Lose 4 on offense:
-1st team All CAA,AA, and likely draft pick OG Dorian Brooks
-3rd team All CAA WR Rockheed McCarter
-3rd Team All CAA Tightend Mike Caussin
-starting center who, uh, I'll be nice,....struggled

Lose 3 on defense:
-All World Moats
-2nd Team All CAA DT Sam Daniels
-2nd team All CAA CB Scotty McGee

95', I would change that to: "because in 2008 we had an opportunity to host for the first time since 2004, but since Bourne made such a piss poor bid, we got sent to Lehigh in the 1st round".

Since 06' JMU has made high bids. In 06' was no opportunity to host since non seed JMU was geographically paired with #4 seed YSU in the 1st round, and in 2007 since non seed JMU was geographically paired with non seed ASU in the 1st round, and I don't see JMU ever hosting ASU in the playoffs unless JMU is a seed and ASU isn't (or its in the semis and JMU is a higher seed).

7-4 (7 Div I wins) from the CAA will likely mean playoffs but NO 1st round bye. That could very well happen to JMU and if so JMU would be in a position to host 1st round game vs another #13-#20 team.

8-3 (8 Div I wins) from the CAA will likely mean a 1st round bye non seed, which would mean in the 2nd round (round of 16) paired up with another 1st round bye, non seed, non CAA. (I ASSume the winners of the 4 1st round games will be paired with the top 4 seeds). That could very well happen to JMU and if so JMU could be in a position to host a 2nd round (round of 16) game as long as they weren't paired up with ASU.

Thinking about it, JMU probably has a slightly better chance of hosting a game if they go 7-4 than 8-3. It would just mean hosting one of the 4 1st round games vs hosting a 2nd round (round of 16 game).

If JMU has a home playoff game in 2010 and stadium construction prevents us from playing at home we just go to Norfolk and play at ODU:)then we take the 757 recruits, not only from ODU but VT and UVA too, after showing Bridgeforth on the giant video board.

At least Bourne isn't saying like last year, when he ruled out playing at another stadium because he said that even if we did move it, we lose our home field advantage anyways. That was a retarded statement, because even if you played at another stadium in VA you'd be giving up some of your homefield advantage, but at least you wouldn't be giving homefield advantage to another team, esp to an out of state one.

On the CAAZone several people mentioned Richmond's City Stadium now that UR is vacating it. Great location, as you have all the Richmond area alumni, plus its within 1.5-2 hrs of all the Tidewater and No VA/DC area alumni, and about 2 hrs from JMU. JMU brought about 8k of the 16+ k at the UR game in 08', and could probably do at least that for a playoff game. Problem is Richmond City Stadium is a DUMP.

As far as the 3 sites mentioned in the article, not even sure why DIII Shenandoah Univ Stadium was mentioned. Sure its pretty new and only 1 1/4 hr from JMU and their HC played at JMU, but it has a listed capacity of 3500. Basically a nice HS school stadium. Even with a bunch of temp bleachers brought in and SRO I couldn't see that fitting more than 7-8k. Way too small.

UVGay is WAY Too big-would be ridiculous.

IF JMU makes the playoffs and IF get to host, if it was at VMI that would work well. An hr from JMU, and they have a nice 10k stadium that got a 15 million renovation completed in 06'.

Plus its not like anyone would have to worry about VMI being in the playoffs. Afterall all, in 32 seasons of I-AA playoffs since 1978, VMI has made the playoffs ZERO times. Haven't had a winning record since 1982.
