Gardner-Webb 28 - Brevard 14

Post by elcid83 »

A game that I thought would be a 50-0 blowout turned out to be much closer thanks to Brevard's ability to control the time of possession with their rarely seen Wing T Option style of offense. GW had to sit star RB Patrick Hall because of a bad leg, but Kenny Little #6 was ready to play.

GW got off to a great start when we forced a fumble on Brevard's 2nd play of the game and Bandit Jordan Woods recovered.

On our first play from scrimmage, Kenny Little #6 scored the first 6 points of the game.

Unfortunately, Kenny broke his collar bone a few plays later and we brought in freshman, Juanne Blount, to tote the rock. Juanne had a stellar debut for the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 144 yds performance and a TD and established himself as a solid contender for BS Offensive Player and/or Freshman of the Week.

Brevard's offensive scheme allowed them to control the football for over 38 minutes. Unfortunately, this meant that GW did not get to play as many players as we would have liked to play. QBs John Rock and Chandler Browning both got to see significant playing time as the coaching staff makes up their mind as to who will be our starter at this position. The competition for this position during camp has been strong and there is no clear #1 at this point. Rock started the game, but Browning likely had just as many snaps. Rock did connect on a TD pass to Jamal Patmon among other connections and he will likely be the first QB on the field at Akron although I expect to see Browning as well. With no disrespect intended for either of our boys, Stan Doolittle and his years of experience looked much more confident in the pocket last year. It is going to be interesting to watch these guys grow into their jobs.

#3 John Rock

#12 Chandler Browning

#9 Jeffery Williams [LB] had a big night when the D was still trying to recover from the loss of BSDPOY Marty Patterson. Williams was the leading tackler with 18 tackles for the game including this 6 yds QB sack.

Image

67 yds of penalties either showed a young GW team that was growing together or showed an undisciplined team that needs to change its evil ways. Either way, this stat needs to improve if GW is going to beat an FBS football program.

Courtney Roundtree [#23] made the transition from QB to DB and he made it well. Courtney had 9 tackles [6 unassisted] and he is going to be a force at DB.

Image

On another positive note, we scored 100% on 4 red zone TD attempts and did not try a field goal last night.

The Runnin' Bulldogs now turn their attention to the Akron Zips who lost yesterday to Syracuse by a score of 29-3. Their stats do not show a team that we should be worried about although we have to assume that they have superior measurables and speed. However, this should be an opportunity for GW to bring an FCS over FBS victory if we can improve our play next Saturday.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

A win is a win is a win.....but our guys and coaching staff need to have one helluva a week of preparation. The competition step up is huge, we have a long bus ride (at least broken out over 2 days) and we have to fix the following:

Time of Possession: 38 against, 22 for
3 and out Off Series: 5 of 10
Offensive Plays: 48
RB Depth: lost our 2 deep guy with a multi fractured collarbone
Some d.u.m.b. penalties
 :?

On the positive side, 1st game excitememt/jitters are behind us. We found an explosive gem in Freshman RB Juan Blount. Patrick Hall, leading G-Dubb RB returns on a fully healed ankle sprain (could have played last week) and our 2 young QB's both have some game experience under their belt and a very talented pool of WR's to throw to. On the defensive side of the ball, Jeffrey Williams - LB looks to be back to his devastating self with 18 total tackles, converted safety Lyndrez Leslie (LB) had an explosive 1st game at his new position and several young defenders such as Hudson Smith showed they have the right stuff to contribute more and more each week. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Next up, FBS member Akron Zips, high noon this Saturday at InfoCision Stadium.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs

Love the all red unis and was shocked by the score. Went and watched BC's opening day win over EWC but just didn't figure they would be anywhere near in the game with you guys. Good luck this weekend, see ya on the 18th!

Not giving away any inside secrets here since the head coach stated all this info during the Big South Conference Coaches Teleconference yesterday morning but here is some of the details on the injury front.

1) Our 4 deep RB pool is severely hampered/depleted and we're only 1 week into the season. Starting RB Patrick Hall (leading 09 rusher and scorer of 12 tds) still bothered by high ankle sprain and didn't move very well in the early week practice session; primary back-up Kenny Little lost for the season with a multi-fractured collar bone; 3rd depth chart FR-RB DeJuan Blount had a breakout game in his 1st college rushing for over 130 yds and a TD but missed much time in camp and is still learning the whole offense/blitz pick-up schemes so play calling is somewhat limited; 4th depth chart FR-RB Nino Woolridge continues to be a question mark with a back injury and his status for this week is undetermined along with Patrick Hall.

2) Breaking in young QB's takes some time and plenty of patience. Due to RB inexperience/injury the playbook has been contracted so as not to put the young QB's under undue pressure from 6 or 7 men rush/blitz packages. Yet, the coaches know and want to get the ball in the receivers/TE playmakers hands more (T. Perry, M. Saunders, J. Patmon, J. Miller) and so would expect to see the ball in the air more than the 19 attempts from Game 1.

3) Defensively, the Dawgs must play with a tremendous amount of determination this weekend to slow up a BCS school's running game so that time of possession is not too unbalanced. The overall size and depth of a BCS school vs an FCS school can wear you down if you allow them to run the ball down your throat and maintain long drives.

4) Defensively, the Dawgs secondary must play well and not give up the big plays to keep the Dawgs in the game against the Zips.

This posters view is that the Dawgs must win the turnover battle, force the Zips 3 and out on at least 1/3 of their possessions, hold the Zips under 180 yds rushing and 350 total yards and score at least 24 points to have a shot at the upset. Weather forecast looks to be low 70's and partly cloudy so fatigue from depth differential shouldn't be influenced by hot, humid weather. Looking forward to the game in Akron's new InfoCision Stadium, hoping there's a big crowd and expecting a visit with some fellow dads to the Winking Lizard Tavern for a few cold beverages.
