NCAA Lays Smackdown on USC

Post by SUUTbird »

The NCAA has ruled that the University of Southern California athletic department exhibited a lack of institutional control from 2004 to 2009 for a wide array of rules violations committed in its football, men’s basketball and women’s tennis programs.

The NCAA finally came down on the University of Southern California and the repercussions of this are huge for the Trojans football, mens basketball and womens tennis teams. The Trojan football team alone is losing/recieving:

- A postseason ban in football following the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

- A loss of 30 total football scholarships over the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons.

- A vacation of all football victories starting in December 2004 and running through the 2005 season. This includes the national championship win over Oklahoma on Jan. 4, 2005.

Talk about getting your ass handed to you, hopefully the university and all its athletics have learned to follow the rules, :ohno:

I'm not sure if USC graduated 30+ players or not, but if they didn't, how does this scholarship sanction thing work? The NCAA can't surely force USC to take away scholarships from students who already have them, right?

Meh, I probably don't understand this whole scholarship process anyways.

I don't know either, but I'm guessing the '30 total' means it could be 10 per year for each of the 3 years.

I'm thinking that too.
Or perhaps a graduated (pardon the pun) penalty of 5 the first year, 10 the second year and 15 the third year.

Wonder if one of the reasons Pete Carroll jumped ship was because he knew something like this might be coming down.

He must have known it; there was no way he didn't. Granted there were many reasons he left, this was one of them for sure.

At least in Seattle he doesn't have to worry about all the University/Academic aspects of the team and just focus on winning. I can't wait to see what he does in his first year... there's been a major refacing of the team.
