GREAT WEST CONFERENCE SPRING SUMMARY

Post by SUUTbird »

Here is what has been going on in the Great West Conference this spring. it is honestly looking like the conference slate for all teams will be tough and i can see the same result much like last years cluster $%*@ in conference play :thumb:.

CAL POLY MUSTANGS:
AN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Four touchdowns and a pair of long field goals helped the offense (Green) defeat the defense (White) 59-42 in Cal Poly’s annual Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Fullback Jake Romanelli and quarterbacks Tony Smith and Andre Broadous all scored touchdowns on runs while Broadous also connected with Eric Gardley on a 60-yard touchdown pass. Senior Jake West, despite missing a pair of extra-point kicks, booted field goals ...

Thoughts: Judging from this it looks like that Cal Poly has once again to win the Great West and get an @ large berth especially with the playing field expanded to 20. The Mustangs are finally healthy and if they can stay that way i can see them being one of the top contenders in the conference in 2010.

NORTH DAKOTA ________:
GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- With the help of a trio of touchdowns from running back Josh Murray (Pepin, Wis.), the white jersey-clad offense won the University of North Dakota's 2010 Canad Inns Sioux Spring Football Game with a score of 45-36. Over 1,000 fans showed up at the Alerus Center for the Saturday afternoon scrimmage.

Thoughts: With a new offense and the return of Josh Murray North Dakota is a very scary team this year in my opinion. With the return of Murray into the backfield along with John Sutton it creates a "Thunder and Lightning" scenario for ND and along with an experienced defense I can easily seeing North Dakota doing much better and having a shot at the GWC crown. I think the game @ Montana will show how far they have come.

SOUTH DAKOTA COYOTES:
VERMILLION, S.D. - Several players shined in the University of South Dakota football team’s annual Red/White Spring Game Friday night in the DakotaDome. The Red (Coyote offense) prevailed in the game over the White (Coyote Defense), 48-33.

Thoughts: The coyotes have had to replace many starters the biggest void being left by their LB core and QB. Record setting Noah Shepard graduated and has been invited to the Green Bay Packers minicamp and it looks like the void will be filled by JR. Dante Warren. If the yotes defense can gel and Warren settles in i can see South Dakota making a run at the Great West Crown.

SOUTHERN UTAH THUNDERBIRDS
CEDAR CITY, Utah, April 24 – Brad Sorensen completed 7-of-8 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown and Daryl Brown rushed for two more scores as the White Squad took a 31-12 win over the Red in Southern Utah’s annual Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday.

Thoughts: The Thunderbirds this year if anything have gotten even better. With the transfer of Brad Sorensen from BYU along with a stable of reliable running backs i feel that we have the tools this year to take the Great West and get our first winning season & playoff berth in the FCS ranks. Our defense, the weak point in 2009 is now one of our strongest weapons returning alot of starters. Look out for SUU in 2010.

UC-DAVIS AGGIES:

*i have looked all over the internet but cannot find anything regarding the 2010 aggies spring game as they have no word of it on their site or anywhere else. Will keep looking*

Thoughts: The Aggies return a very experienced and good team in 2010 that has one goal. Reach the playoffs. 2009's GWC champion brings back alot of offense and defensive weapons and if they play consistently well for the 2010 season i could see them repeating as champs and getting their playoff berth. However they need to get by a tough schedule first.

I have found the article for the UC-Davis Spring game guys, enjoy :thumb:

UC-DAVIS AGGIES:
DAVIS, Calif. - Quarterback Greg Denham threw for 219 yards, Sean Creadick had nine catches for 105 yards and a score, and the UC Davis Blue beat the Gold 14-3 during the team's Spring Game before several hundred fans at Aggie Stadium on Saturday afternoon, bringing to a close spring drills for the UC Davis football team.
