Sleepers in the FCS 2010
I found this on the Vancouver (BC) Sun newspaper page and it looks like it was from Sporting News. It lists as some of the teams that could make noise this year as Sacramento State, Georgia Southern, Hampton, Missouri State, Princeton and Southern. Maybe some good reading and good press for the FCS.

There may be a problem with the link above. Let me work on it.

The link does not seem to want to work. It is available manually at Vancouver Sun Sports page, (vancouversun.com/sports/) then go to CFL, then FCS Football under More Football, then the name "With a push, sleeping giants may awaken".
Really a good article about the up and coming season for those six teams.

Does the Ivy League really not participate in the FCS playoffs? What's the reasonin' behind that one? Academics?

Re: Sleepers in the FCS 2010
Cal Poly. To supplement our current core Romanelli/ Yocum/ Houston, we're stacked at slotback, and healed up and sealed up on O-line. We already have plenty of "FBS grade" talent transfer this season including West Virginia kickoff returner/runningback transfer Mark Rodgers, Fresno City College Kyle Murphy. Dominique Johnson, who transfered last year from UCLA proved to be our most productive receiver. (Baylor defensive end transfer Matt Singletary has said he is coming as well).
High school recruits include the 4.4 talent K.J. Cusack, and very highly touted kicker James Langford (ranked #9 in the US by Sailer).
We won't have to worry about long kicks/ kickofss being a problem anymore.. or depth at slotback.

Hm. That's the first article I've read by the new guy at Sports Network. Anyone know anything about Craig Haley?

Yep and here are their wins from last yearScreamin_Eagle174 wrote:They finished 6-5... only one game off from UNI at 7-4.clenz wrote:Missoura State...LOL
tennesse martin - 5-6 4-4 in the OVC
murray state - 3-8 2-6 in the OVC
Youngstown State - 6-5 4-4 in the MVC
Western Illinois - 1-10 0-8 in the MVC
North Dakota State - 3-8 2-6 in the MVC
Indiana State - 1-10 1-7 in the MVC
That gives their wins last year a combined record of 19-47. So they got 2 wins against the might OVC and 4 wins against the bottom 4 in MVC. They didn't beat a single team that finished a head of them or had a better record.
We in the MVC have been hearing for years about how good MSU will be "next year". They are like the Cubs, except the Cubs put together a good regular season now and then...MSU doesn't. So, think of them like the Cleveland Indians as of late.
They also lost to UNI 35-7. That 7 came with about 10 seconds left in the game as UNI had their third string defense in the game and MSU still had their first team offense in. UNI didn't use their first team in the second half at all really.

If you are looking for an MVC sleeper I would have picked Illinois State before MSU.

Can't see how you can leave Delaware out. Every season there is the possibility that they could be a superpower.
GSU could be a sleeper, but I don't think we'll quite have it together this year.
Also, I agree with Jelly about UTC.

Yup - we went from an App State homer to a Princeton homer!?Skjellyfetti wrote:Hm. That's the first article I've read by the new guy at Sports Network. Anyone know anything about Craig Haley?

At least he won't have a chance to put that homer opinion into anything that matters.I arrive at TSN with over 22 years of experience in newspaper, magazine and internet journalism. I was a beat reporter for Princeton University and Ivy League football for 11 seasons, and have selected and written preseason FCS Top 25 and All-American teams for national magazines.

But you are still correctPRINCETON (Ivy League)
OK, Ivy League schools don't participate in the FCS playoffs, but considering the Tigers played in the first collegiate game (against Rutgers in 1869), this is a program that has tradition. The results haven't matched the history, the excellent facilities or the big donors to the program. The Tigers' only Ivy League crown over the last 14 seasons was a shared title with Yale in 2006, and the fan base is disgruntled.
Enter new coach Bob Surace, an all-league center on Princeton's 1989 Ivy League-championship squad. He left the Cincinnati Bengals after eight seasons as an assistant to become the Tigers' head coach, though he's keeping the black and orange stripes worn by both teams. His young coaching staff should breathe energy into the program, which is coming off three straight 4-6 seasons (and 3-4 in the league each time) and returns quarterback Tommy Wornham and linebacker Steve Cody

No love for NDSU? I thought they would be running through the playoffs on a yearly basis by now.

Re: Sleepers in the FCS 2010
Wouldn't qualify Delaware as a sleeper this year - it's pretty widely known that they should be pretty good this year, especially with Devlin being a senior and with as many starters back as they have. If they're not a playoff team it will be shocking.Pwns wrote:Can't see how you can leave Delaware out. Every season there is the possibility that they could be a superpower.

As for Princeton being a sleeper, even if they are, will anyone notice? Their OOC is Lehigh, Lafayette, and Colgate so they don't play anyone outside of the Ivy or the Patriot. They could be an absolute surprise and be fantastic and no one will really notice.

Re: Sleepers in the FCS 2010
From the SoCon I would consider UTC and Furman to be better sleeper picks than GA Southern. No disrespect to the Eagles but with a new offensive system, new coach, and a defense last year that couldn't stop anyone I think they are a year away. I think they arrive in 2012. Elon isn't a sleeper but they still have a stud at QB. The ultimate sleeper is WCU as they've been asleep for years....they have better personel under Wagner but it hasn't resulted in wins...yet.

Pssh you know they are bad when they lose back-to-back years to the worst two Youngstown State programs in decades!grizzaholic wrote:No love for NDSU? I thought they would be running through the playoffs on a yearly basis by now.
Watch out for those Penguins. If we get a QB transfer, we have a great shot at the playoffs. Expect some big crowds for the SIU and UNI games, especially if we play well at the start of this season.

I agree. I skimmed the article so I could really tell if the writer was saying this year or in the near future. I certainly think GSU as the potential in the near future. Normally I would say one shouldn't call Furman a sleeper but I guess since we have been asleep the last three years we would qualify.
