1) Process to get the stadium approved by the city held up for years b/c of neighborhood opposition b/c you want a bigger stadium. Continue to play in 80-year old stadium miles from campus that is a dump.
2) Find a middle-ground (smaller) stadium on campus that is opening up in September.

I think you have to assume that the university did the best they could with the situation they were dealt. THAT's what a real businessman knows. Oh, I forgot, EWU has the jedi school of business where you can magically make everybody do what you want them to do.

At the moment there is no other real spot for the track to be moved to. Because as of now there is no place to put the track if they were to remove it... I am sorry that UR is not in the middle of east bumf**k. The University's neighborhood is one of the nicer ones in the city, so most all of the neighbors are quite wealthy and have a good deal of political pull.

It is sort of hard to get a feel on how large this will look at this point. Having the temporary bleachers behind the north endzone will definitely change the look, but so will adding the seating decks and seats and bleachers to the grandstands. Excited to see it finished.

The place is looking good. I think UR's administration did the right thing by starting off small to avoid a fight with the city. Once the facility is built, it will be a lot easier to expand as needed.

Walnut agreed to drop its lawsuit challenging the construction of a proposed NFL stadium in return for $9 million, an annual cash payment and assurances that traffic and noise will be controlled, according to documents obtained by this newspaper Wednesday.

Diamond Bar opted to settle with Industry in April, receiving more than $20 million to deal with traffic, noise and light effects, instead of filing a lawsuit.

Industry will also guarantee that Walnut receives an annual payment into a "community fund." The amount of that payment will vary year-by-year depending on how many events the stadium hosts. Estimates in the agreement suggest that Walnut could receive $350,000 per year if several thresholds are met.

The settlement includes $1 million to be paid for a new athletic field at a local middle school, $300,000 to cover legal fees, and funds to construct a 6-foot block wall and landscaped berm to lessen visual impacts in neighborhoods near the stadium.

It could receive an additional $700,000 for parks and recreational facilities for each year in which at least 24 events, or 10 or more NFL games, are held at the stadium.

So, let's see: Diamond Bar gets $21 million in a lump sum, $300K in legal fees and up to $700K per year for years that there are events at the stadium; Walnut gets $9 million dollar lump sum, plus $750K in legal and consultant fees and up to $350K per year. All in all, about a $30 million lump sum payment, over $1 million in legal fees and the possibility of paying over $1 million each year the stadium is open.

By the way, this is all before they break ground on the stadium. You're right, Richmond probably should've just told the community to go screw themselves...

This example is about as good as posting a picture of a high school field in Alaska as evidence of the popularity of Boise State's field...

But what we're trying to tell you is they were not going to cut the track team! You gotta have a track to have a track team. To add to Andy's post: Where are you gonna put the track? Where do you think you've gotta go to get approval for the track?

Keeping or not keeping the track had nothing to do with the size of the stadium, or the neighbors. It had everything to do with fitting everything that the Spider's needed on the finite space that is Richmond's campus. In the FUTURE, Richmond might be able to move some of their intramural fields off campus to nearby property that the University owns. If that happens, then maybe a soccer / lacrosse / track stadium can be built where some of the intramural fields are. Conceivably they then could revamp the stadium with more seating / no track. But we are not talking the near future. Richmond is building a stadium that fits their space and money and needs. And they are not putting in some ugly red and blue field...
