Next Year's team.

Post by Screamin_Eagle174 »

Who are your key losses? Who are your key returnees? Question marks?

Losses: QB Matt Nichols, WR Aaron Boyce, WR Tony Davis, TE Nathan Overbay
Returnees: RB Taiwan Jones, WR Nick Edwards, WR Ashton Gant, DT Renard Williams, LB J.C. Sherritt, SS Matt Johnson, LB Zach Johnson
Questionmarks: QB, Defense, Play Calling

Next year for EWU will be interesting to say the least. Whoever steps into Nichols' shoes is going to dictate how we approach next year. We will have 4 redshirt freshman/sophmores next year who've thrown the ball a grand total of about 10 times in actual games. Perhaps the next all-star QB at EWU is among those unproven 4, much like Nichols surprised us all after redshirting under Erik Meyer. Coach Baldwin hasn't ruled out bringing in a JC transfer or FBS dropdown if one becomes available, however I think a more likely scenario would be to turn up the ground game now that we have a feature back like Jones and work around a 3 or 4 back rotation (Baldwin got Chase King and Darriell Beaumonte into the mix a fair amount this season). Getting Zach Johnson back on defense will be big, along with Sherritt coming back for his senior year, but the defense as a whole will have to get better to compensate for the loss of Nichols.

I just hope we can reach a winning record - anything beyond that will be a surprise.

Griz lose 6 starters on each side of the ball:

Offense - Mariani (WR), Palmer (WR), Beaudin/Pfahler (TE), Horn (T), Hillesland (G), Dyk (T)
Defense - Palmer (DE), Mullins (DT), Fisher (OLB), Lebsock (MLB), Thompson/Swink (CB), Schillinger (FS)

Griz return 6 starters on each side (including kickers):

Offense - Selle (QB), Reynolds (RB), Sambrano (WR), Opperud (G), Verlanic (C), McKnight (K)
Defense - Campbell (DE), Hobbs (DT), Shaw (OLB), Johnson (CB), Stoll (SS), Wren (P)

UM also loses notables in RB Thomas Brooks-Fletcher, FB/H-Back Kevin Klaboe, and DE George Mercer.

There could also be a coaching change, of course…

Offense
QB Brad George, RB/TB Alvin Canady, RT Calvin Gore, LT Alex Luna, TE Kyle Anderson, TE Andrew Brooks, FB Trey Hampton, LG Michael Schneeweis (2nd team)

Defense
DE/Bandit Travis Houston, NG Garrett Hood, CB Will Thompson, MLB Joe Bell, LB Kevin Odelusi (2nd team)
A few others that saw limited pt

Returning the young but now experienced Defense
CB Drenard William, Sr, had medical resdhirt and our best CB
DE/Bandit Sam Pier
2 other DE's with experience
3 CB's that helped fill void left by Williams and will have to replace Thompson
All safeties returning
NG Ralston Dews who saw a lot of pt in 2008
Remainder of D returning.

Rumour someone on the D line is unhappy and looking to transfer but no word on who as yet

Special teams all returns except Thompson and Canady.

Offense
New QB in Tim Hawkins, RS sophomore, a southpaw who can run, pass and receive in a Wildcat
Inexperienced (used sparingly in 2008) so will have to see how he develops. Not the arm strenth of George
but can move around in the pocket and make broken plays work

Hopefully returning - Karrington Bush at RB and Frank Reddic, who we had to remove the redshirt
from when Bush went down in game 1. Should have been utlized more in 2008. A Bush clone in style, speed and playmaking.
Needs to add a bit of weight and strength. Run game should return in 2009.

FB - Jeff McVaney will be a Junior if he stays with 2 sports again. He is a pitcher on BB team. Great leg strength
Filled in well in 2008 but I still feel they under-utilize the FB position. Second FB will be a redshirt - Josh Wray

OL - some big shoes to fill. Not sure who we have waiting to take over for the 2, 4 yr starters Luna and Gore.
Possibly Josh Vernon for Luna but no clue on Gore's replacement. His back-up also graduates.
LG was filled by transfer Jason Hannan. Schneeweis was his back-up
All our receivers return except TE where we have on 6'3" backup coming back and some redshirts.

What do you mean math? Didn't you see Villanova was playing with 12 on defense???!!
