It looks like you place a high premium in sacks and tackles for loss.

I would put the nations leader in tackles J.C. Sherrit ahead of Legree. One of Sherritt's team mates, Matt Johnson, has relatively the same numbers as Legree.

I take stats from the league websites and he has 11.5 on the BSC website. That is why mine are off of what you expected to see. Here is the link: http://www.bigskyconf.com/sports/footba ... m#team.def

The NCAA also has him at 11.5 because you don't give an assisted tackle for loss (1) you give it (.5). EWU is crediting each assisted tackle for loss as a whole TFL instead of a half TFL.

I almost put Sherrit ahead of LeGree and I saw Johnson's numbers. One thing I will say that I weigh heavily is production, team defense, previous awards, name prestige, NFL prospects, etc. I try to factor a lot of things. LeGree is also the leader on the #39 total defense and Sherrit is the leader of the #109 total defense. When it came down to it LeGree has been lights out the last two years, he will play on Sundays, and I think he is a better overall player on a better overall defense.

I am certainly glad you brought it up though as I am not the only opinion in town and I would like to be challenged on my picks.

Taiwan Jones has 4 receiving TDs, not 3. No, EWU isn't counting half-TDs. :P

In my view, the Payton Award should go to a running back, since that is what Walter was. We need to establish a separate award for QBs.

Made the correction! Sorry about that. I did it very quickly today trying to get it out before TSN sent out the ballots to voters. Thanks for pointing it out!

Per game it has to be Armanti, I wonder how much the 2 missed games will cost him?

In many years I think it would cost him heavily but voters have proven they will not vote for a transfer with issues so RP is out. Then I think Randolph has too many INTs and people consider the Patriot League to be down this year. The same could be said with the OVC. The only candidates that I think will push him are Karim and Nichols. Not sure if Nichols has the name to beat him out and nobody from the MVFC has ever won the Payton. Hudgins is worthy just like Nichols and Karim but he lost to ASU and was held in check for much of that game. It will be interesting to see what happens. It should definitely be AE, Karim, Nichols, or Hudgins. This is one year that I don't think the winner is obvious by any stretch.

I would certainly welcome him as the winner. He clearly deserves to win one based on his season. I think Edwards has been so special that he deserves two in his career but there are others who have put together Payton Award winning seasons. I am a voter in the process and this would be my vote as of today but I might hold my ballot for a week and think things over very good before voting. :)

QB BRAD GEORGE, TEXAS STATE, SR.
PASSING: 258-409, 3,121 yards, 23 TDs, 11 INTs, 63.05%
RUSHING: 37 carries, 26 yards
TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS: 23
PASSING YARDS PER GAME: 7th/283.73
PASS EFF: 25th/140.36
TACKLES: 1
GAMES: 11

If you are going to list some of those other guys you can't leave George out when comparing some of the stats. I know he won't make anyone elses list but he had a damn fine year with 6 - 300+ yd games. Some form of recognition, even if it is only on this board, is warranted.

Should they also establish seperate defensive awards for DBs?

Something should be done. The FBS has, more or less, gone this route lately, too, with the Heisman. They have both turned from the best player in college football to a QB contest. It ain't right. :ohno:

Im not sure what the Payton award is about. Its not football. The best running back in the FCS is not among the final 5?

I have to agree that Edwards deserves to leave with 2 Payton Awards. He's a once in a lifetime player and has great stats this year while missing 2 games.

When do ballots have to be submitted? I always thought they were in before the playoffs started.

I agree that Edwards is a special player. One who has been surrounded by a ton of other gifted players. App State has speed everywhere and usually plays great Defense. I look at what Matt Nichols means to his team. EWU does not have speed like App State does nor do they play the kind of defense that App State does. However Nichols has put up great numbers with 3300 plus yards so far, 30 TD's and only 5 Int's. He has put those numbers up without a true speed receiver other than Davis and he doesn't make many mistakes. His career numbers are impressive too. He is the Big Sky Conferences All time career leader in total yards and only needs 53 passing yards to be the All Time Big Sky leader in that category. If EWU makes a run in the playoffs he could become the All Time Division 1AA leader. He has also broke the previous school records set by former Payton Award winner Eric Meyer. Matt Nichols should win the Payton award this year based on his year this year and his career numbers.

Au contraire, Pierre. Karim is clearly the best RB in FCS whether or not that translates to the Payton Award.

He is by far the best RB I saw all year long. There is really not a clear #2 back either. I would put Will Ford, Trevyn Smith, Chase Reynolds, and Toddrick Pendland in that next tier but Karim is clearly #1 and there is a gap between him and #2 from what I saw.
