PSU-OSU

You were right on the money, Jalmond. The Rodgers brothers running team were impressive. And OSU's offensive line gave them all the holes. Conversely, their passing game was pretty thin. But why bother, with runners like that? Be interesting to see if Pac-10 schools can stop them. We sure couldn't. As for PSU, it's pretty obvious what we need: a red zone plan! On the one yard line, and we couldn't get it in?? We need a short game, and for that we need stronger runners. And it wouldn't hurt to have a consistent kicker (punter Duyndam looked fine). The Oregonian mentioned that OSU used 7 freshmen. What they didn't mention is that we used 17. Yep, we're still building. But we sure looked better than last year, and winning 5 or 6 this year seems likely.

I actually came away from Corvallis very impressed with both teams. James Rodgers will undoubtably be the fastest receiver we will see all year (Griz and Weber both have some speedy receivers, but James is out of this world) and Jacquizz is the most agile (any one try that cutback move he did right after halftime, I guarantee, would break both ankles). Oregon State appeared to me to be better than even those two teams that played on Thursday.

As for us, Hubel played excellent, with no interceptions and no sacks. He also showed some guts, throwing into some tight coverage and still giving the receivers chances to catch the ball. Fry looked great, Wolverton looked fine at times, but I was disappointed with both Woods and McCaffrey (many drops and misreads).

I had many questions come up regarding the Viking team and that was why I wanted to see this game in person. I came away with many questions answered. We'll be fine. :thumb:

One final point: it may or may not have been noticed that our punting game was outstanding. 5 punts, all of them inside the twenty, one a fair catch and the other four returned for a total of three yards. I don't want to take away anything from our special teams, but that says a lot about hang time. Duyndam is a walk on from Australia, played Australian rules football, but kicked for an American rules club team in I think Canberra. Came to PSU late this summer to try his hand at college ball. He'll be here four years - that's one part of our game we don't have to worry about.
