BOONE — Appalachian State finished the 2008 football season at home but for many of the players the territory was unfamiliar.
Prior to last season, junior cornerback Cortez Gilbert had only experienced a season-ending celebration in Chattanooga, Tenn. with a national championship trophy in hand.
Last year, the Mountaineers won the Southern Conference title for the fourth consecutive year, yet their season ended two games later in a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) quarterfinals playoff game against Richmond, the eventual national champion.
