First recruits commit to Coker, UTSA football

Post by dbackjon »

Brackenridge teammates Malcolm Greer and Earon Holmes and Altair Rice Consolidated defensive tackle Chris Dorsey have become the first players to commit to Larry Coker's fledgling football program at UTSA.

Greer, a 6-foot 1, 175-pound safety, recorded 81 tackles, including 57 solos, with two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and five interceptions last season as a junior.

“Coach Coker is a great coach who has coached some great players,” Greer said. “It's pretty exciting to play in front of my hometown. Being home makes it so much better.”

Holmes alternated at quarterback during the first few games of 2008 before switching full-time to wide receiver. Listed at 6-4, 165 pounds, he caught 27 passes for 520 yards and nine touchdowns.

“I chose UTSA because it's going to be here, in San Antonio, and most of my family is here,” Holmes said. “I want to stay close to them. Playing Division I football in my hometown, that's like a dream.”

Dorsey (6-2, 240) has been a starter since his freshman year, earning all-district honors in each of the past two seasons. He had 94 tackles, including 16 for loss and six sacks, with four forced fumbles and four tipped passes.

“I think we can start something real fast,” Dorsey said. “I had some other schools that were interested, but (UTSA) is where I want to go.”

Only days after earning its first batch of commitments, UTSA's football program landed a splashy follow-up on Friday by luring East Central running back Chris Johnson away from a growing list of suitors that included two Big 12 schools.

Chris Johnson ran for 1,520 yards and 14 TDs last season.
