One tier down, but this describes UNCs attempt in FCS, the very best teams in the school's history were at the D-2 level and they were way better than today's Bears.Mvemjsunpx wrote:A lot of teams fail after moving up, but I think Idaho is unique in that they actually become worse in absolute terms. Great Northwest
EWU
Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
Weber State
Portland State

Anyone see this quote from the presser....
"UI did not ask for deadline extension, Staben said the Big Sky was considering other members and offer provided Idaho with guaranteed spot."

Probably either talking about NMSU, or maybe UVU starting football?

This seems most likely. Expanding to 15/13 wouldn't be ideal, but the conference might be expecting UND to bolt for the MVFC/Summit at some point since their NDSU rivalry embargo is now over.dbackjon wrote:So UNI to Big Sky?clenz wrote:Anyone see this quote from the presser....

Still… NMSU has never been FCS and has no ties to the Big Sky, so them joining seems unlikely.

Only ties are to NAU - but that was 60 years ago when we were in the same conference.
NMSU/NAU are still in each other's top 8 played opponents.

Here's the Vandal Board for those that can't currently find any beheading videos to watch or car crashes to rubberneck.

54-23-1 (69.8%) to 65.8% vs the MVFC.
Outside of Montana, those bastards, UNI dominates the Big Sky
Cal Poly 6-1
EWU 6-0
Idaho State 2-0
Montana 0-5
Montana State 2-1
North Dakota 25-13
Northern Arizona 3-1
Northern Colorado 2-1-1
Portland State 1-0
Southern Utah 5-0
Weber State 2-1
You don't want that in your conference.
NMSU is interesting. I know the MVC has some interesting in bringing the m back to the MVC if the situation is right. Wonder if the MVFC would be willing to take them.

By taking Idaho, the Big Sky can now cut loose NAU.

That board seems to have very little traffic? I am not used to seeing threads with so few posts in them but I didn't really look to see how old they are I guess. Just doesn't seem too active considering what it should be on a day like this.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Here's the Vandal Board for those that can't currently find any beheading videos to watch or car crashes to rubberneck.

Wow, that place might be indicative of why they are in the shape they are in. That is pretty bad even for a home board isn't it?

How many of the UND wins came when they were DII?

I think Northeast Louisiana...now known as Louisiana Monroe...may have been like that too. There were years when Northeast Louisiana was I-AA that they had more players drafted than LSU did. There was one year where the two starting running backs for Northeast Louisiana both started as rookies on NFL teams the next year. And they remain the only Southland Conference program to ever win a national championship...quarterbacked by a quarterback that started in a Super Bowl.Mvemjsunpx wrote:A lot of teams fail after moving up, but I think Idaho is unique in that they actually become worse in absolute terms. Since going I-A/FCS they have one winning season in 22 years. That was their one post season appearance and they were beaten by 45-14 by Ohio in their bowl game.

Yeah, you make a good case for ULM's pathetic-ness. UMass could also qualify, though they haven't been FBS nearly as long.JohnStOnge wrote:I think Northeast Louisiana...now known as Louisiana Monroe...may have been like that too. That's the only Vandal board I know of. It was fairly active in March around the time of the Big Sky Tournament, and there are other Big Sky boards less active than that one.Ursus A. I remember in the build-up to this move, I think was last summer, that board was really really active with plenty saying that if they drop down theyll stop supporting them and go with Washington State or hold their noses and support BSU so I guess everyone's pretty much resigned to their fate now and they're not posting anymore.Ursus A. Would say I feel sorry for their predicament, but frankly I don't.
It's their own fault they are in this predicament and they are now reaping what they have sewn for so many years

Hahaha, just saw this in the paper. I'm sure their fans are thrilled. I can imagine how pleasant most of them are going to be once we start encountering them. They already feel we're all beneath them.
Now that we have 3 arch rivals, how does our scheduling work? Drop EWU from the yearly arrangement?

Why We're Leaving the Football Arms Race
Nevertheless, should we pursue conference affiliation, which conference makes geographic and institutional sense and what financial resources would be required to make us competitive in Group of 5 football? From a geographic perspective, the Mountain West Conference would be most desirable, but the average expenditures in that league, $38 million, are twice that of Idaho at $19 million, and literally price us out.
More typical Group of 5 expenditures, such as $29 million in the Mid-American Conference or Conference USA, still far exceed those at Idaho. In contrast, Idaho athletic expenditures are typical of Big Sky schools. Our expenditures are already subsidized by our students (though to a lesser extent than at many universities), and that subsidy is limited by our State Board of Education. Should we commit to major additional expenditures from students or donors in order to seek uncertain affiliation?

Re: Welcome back, Idaho
I think this is wishful thinking on their part. It sounds like they actually believe that just because they were FBS, they can just waltz into the Big Sky and suddenly become the "cock of the walk."This is a reset for our football program. We believe Big Sky football will be positive for our athletes and position them to succeed on the field -- our head football coach and I expect Idaho to compete for an FCS championship in 2018.
Frankly, they aren't much higher that North Texas is in the FBS food chain, and the world saw what we did to them last season. They better be ready to prove it on the field
Would they even be eligible to participate in the FCS playoffs?
