In a statement he released he said something about consulting with UF Prez, AD, and his doctors, he is stepping down. He went on to say that while coaching he has ignored his health. Sounds like heath problems to me.

Florida Gators football coach Urban Meyer is resigning.

Meyer, who was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game, cited health reasons as the reason for his departure.

“I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program,” he said in a report on the school's athletic Web site Saturday. “I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.”

Meyer will still coach the Gators on New Year's Day in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati for his final game. He said he plans to still livein the Gainesville area and to be involved with the school.

During his five seasons at Florida, he won two national titles and two SEC championships. His record with the Gators is 56-10 and his .848 winning percentage is the best in school history.

Meyer will hold a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Urban Meyer done at Florida

Post by Willie »

'Health issues' force premature end to Urban Meyer era at Florida
The day after his team's loss in the SEC Championship game, Florida coach Urban Meyer checked himself into Gainesville hospital due to "dehydration." He was quickly released, and the story passed without much attention at the time. But as of tonight, it may go down as the moment that Meyer's burgeoning Gator dynasty came to an end:

Urban Meyer is stepping down as coach of the Florida football team, athletics director Jeremy Foley announced Saturday afternoon in a release.

"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family."

No; they have won two NCs in the last five years under Meyer.

No, because Montana doesn't play in the SEC of the FCS...and Florida hasn't lost the last two national championship games they were in ;).

edit: damn it kemajic!

Update: Urban changed his mind. he's now decided to take a "leave of absence' instead of stepping down.

Good luck with recruiting. If I were recruiting against him I'd be asking players if they wanted to play for an indecisive coach with health issues. You can never be sure when Meyer will return from his leave of absence or, if he does return, how long will he be back.

Not exactly the same thing. Meyer isn't 70.
