Why didn't we see as much resistance to seat belts or speed limits as we do masks?
I have always been against seat belt laws. Realistically, seat belt laws are about physically protecting yourself. I had one guy make the argument to me once that you might not maintain control of your vehicle if you're not strapped in under certain circumstances. But I think that is a stretch.
What I've thought about is mask mandates vs. DUI laws. I suspect a lot of people who are horrified by mask mandates are all for throwing somebody in jail for driving with a 0.08 BAC. The article at
https://www.epermittest.com/drivers-edu ... nk-driving indicates, "Since 1991, it is estimated that around 90,000 lives have been saved as a result of stricter drunk driving laws and alcohol regulation policies."
That's 29 years, so about 3,100 lives saved per year.
Just as an example, there is an estimate cited at
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronaviru ... y-suggests on October 24, 2020, that universal mask wearing would save about 130,000 lives over a 6 month period.
If you know me you know I think DUI laws are over the top. But I do wonder about how strong support seems to be for draconian DUI laws that are estimated to have saved around 90,000 lives over 29 years while there is so much consternation about mask mandates that have the potential to save around 130,000 lives in six months.
