Boy Suspended for Shirt w/ a Gun Image

Post by kalm »

Suspending him was correct but I think the kid made a righteous stand here.
Oregon eighth-grader suspended from school for wearing patriotic shirt showing gun.

As he got older, Holmes’s pride turned into patriotism. He wanted to demonstrate that patriotism last week by wearing a T-shirt to school that included a design memorializing fallen soldiers and bearing the words “Standing for those who stood for us,” according to KATU. Instead, the image on his shirt — boots, a helmet and a gun — got him suspended, the station reported.

Officials at Dexter McCarty Middle School asked Holmes to change his shirt, according to Fox affiliate KPTV. When he refused, the station reported, he was given an ultimatum: Remove the shirt or face suspension.

Kudos to the kid. :thumb:

The school administration is stupid.

I wonder if this would pass the test based on Tinker v Des Moines School District?

I am going to have to strongly disagree on the suspension. The kid is making the right stand, nothing wrong with sticking up for yourself when you feel you are right. The reason I disagree with the suspension is the school administrators probably have no clue what the symbols on the shirt even mean. The knee jerk reaction of "It has a gun" is just that. The "Soldiers Cross" dates back to the civil war and while I am sure the exact pieces of it have changed, the meaning has not. This falls squarely under freedom of speech and this kids intent was good and he has every right to mourn and show his support/patriotism. There are certainly limits on freedom of speech but I really fail to see how this was a threat or something objectionable to anyone around the kid. I am not sure what scares me worse, the fact that this happened or the fact that these are the kind of people that are teaching our kids as they are truly clueless and incapable of using their brains.
The Fallen Soldier Battle Cross, Battlefield Cross or Battle Cross is a symbolic replacement of a cross, or marker appropriate to an individual service-member's religion, on the battlefield or at the base camp for a soldier who has been killed. It is made up of the soldier's rifle stuck into the ground or into the soldier's boots, with helmet on top. Dog tags are sometimes placed on the rifle, and the boots of the dead soldier can be placed next to the rifle. The purpose is to show honor and respect for the dead at the battle site. The practice started during the American Civil War or maybe earlier as a means of identifying the bodies on the battleground before they were removed.

Today, it is an immediate means of showing respect for the dead among the still living members of the troop. It might be seen in the field or base camp after the battle in Afghanistan or Iraq. Used less today as a means to identify the dead but more as a private ceremony among those still living as a means to mourn, as attending the funeral is not always possible for soldiers still in the fight.

Apparently you can. The "raghead" kid made a clock, and like most engineers he lacked common sense in bringing it to school the way he did.

Both kids did nothing wrong.

Common sense is anything but common these days. It's not like the kid wore a confederate flag shirt or a black power shirt... :coffee:

They're not, but it's not a reach in this case. His family history and the appearance of the "clock" make it not a reach IMO.

He refused to change his shirt. He protested and made a stand and the school had no choice. It worked out fine for everybody.

I'm no fan of zero tolerance policies in general. They let school administrators off the hook of having to make tough decisions. Just making everything against the rules and black and white is intellectually lazy.

But since they've decided gun imagery is not allowed, you have to draw the line or everyone is going to push the limits. He really left them no choice.

Besides, schools are not freedom zones. Believe it or not, I'd totally be in favor of school uniforms in public schools...for multiple reasons. It's the conk side of me.

Do you think others would have noticed his shirt if they (school) didn't draw attention to it? IMO, more kids would be likely to try and push the limit NOW becuase they did this.
