Meet the HMMWV replacement

The Army this week selected the company to build its much-anticipated new vehicle to replace the Humvee -- a multibillion dollar contract.

Oshkosh Corporation, located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, won the $6.7 billion contract to produce the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, which will also be used by the Marine Corps.

The initial order will be for 17,000 vehicles, with production set to begin next year. The Army expects to have its first JLTV unit ready to go in fiscal year 2018, according to a release from the Army.

I've seen the GD versions and used to work on OshKosh's M-ATV back in 2010 (this was p/t grunt work. ripping out their cables and installing better ones.) OshKosh is a smart move. Good company, solid product and from my experience way easier to work with than anything from GD. I worked logistics on a GD project and they lacked common sense and waste money, time and resources.

Actually, I think there are 6 of these out back. When I get to work, i'll check.

I hope it's more reliable than the HMMWV is. And I wonder if the Marines have signed off on this yet....

The quoted portion identified it as the JOINT Light Tactical Vehicle, but only cited Army sources. Odd things HAVE happened before with supposedly "joint" projects when one service has the lead (ESPECIALLY when said lead service is the stupid Army)....

How soon before the urban commando/soccer mom SUV version comes out for the civilian folk?

That's all we need, is some Asian female barreling down the interstate in a 5,500 lb bullet.

I'm guessing the civilian version won't be bomb resistant and will probably not be equipped with the gun and turret for most of the US. The central Missouri and Baltimore versions come equipped as pictured.

The JLTV is bad ass. Although I didn't serve, I've spent a great deal of time in HMMWVs. These are good upgrade. The speed, agility, capabilities and COMFORT are a huge improvement. I hear it's about 70% faster, it can be lifted to hot zones, has an electronically raised/lowered suspension, insane weapons capabilites, and probably much more.

The U.S. has a bad habit of preparing for the last war instead of the next one.

As long as we only fight sand niggers in cities, this will be a great vehicle.

If we fight a conventional force in a mud bog or in mountains, this thing might become a cute toy.

I think i've posted this before. I started on a project, when the war was still hot in Afghanistan, that was developing a prototype to replace the current CoC (i'm sure you're familiar with these?)
Spoiler: show
https://marinecorpsconceptsandprograms. ... center-coc
Anyway, instead of using the HMMWV and the M1101 or M1102 trailer, this company that will remain nameless used this, for the mountains of Afghanistan:
Image

A Ford F550. It had 2, batteries (which always drained) armored doors (on factory hinges so the doors weren't easy to open or close), No AC for the cabin, armored glass w/ gun ports and a 5th wheel attachment. 5TH WHEEL!? Are you kidding me? The company lost the project and the project was eventually cancelled due to misappropriations. The cars had no clear title (but belong to a dealership owned by a family member of John Murtha),and these fucking things couldn't go more than a few miles before overheating and breaking down.

So, who got shot, jailed, fined or bitch slapped as punishment for the misappropriations? :suspicious:

Or did we just let them go free because it was considered business as usual?

The contractor out of Illinois got fined, I heard the Captain was demoted, i'm sure some people on the project were fired and John Murtha died about a year later. His family's name and a slew of Ford dealerships in Pennsylvania were all over this mess.

You'd be happy to know (probably not) that all the gear was either reassigned to other projects (tables, chairs, comm equip, etc..), sold or given away (at little cost to the gov't.) i.e. we did the paperwork but the receiving organization paid for everything. It took me and a colleague about 6 months to get rid of the F550s. They are now part of various Hawai'i and Virginia National Guard units. :thumb:

The company I worked for at the time (EMA/SAIC) was given the project and told to salvage it. That's when my boss uncovered the misappropriations and abuse (Murtha). At that point it was a cancelled project and we were told to get rid of everything.

Including the sailboat in Newport News that was used for offshore comm testing.
