They want obedience, of course. But even more, they want their rule, and their belief system, to be accepted and self-sustaining. And the only way to achieve that is to create a new society of people who share those beliefs, even if it means bludgeoning every last citizen into enlightenment.

Haven't finished it all but a fairly dumb article so far.
The left certainly has its share of potential totalitarians, but at least in this country they're a bunch of unarmed peace loving liberal pussies. (Bear with me now, I was channeling my inner Alpha)
IOW's incapable of truly forcing anything on anyone.
The mistake you and the author make is in labeling. Have "leftist" totalitarian states existed? By certain definitions, sure. But many of them had a huge assist from traditional establishment conservatives.
My point: it can come at you from both sides and is not ideological. The article suggests "Orwellian" concepts but keep in mind, Orwell was a democratic socialist.

Thanks. Nice article bout religious fundamentalists, like you and your wife.
I get a little tickled when we start comparing dictatorships in the left and right category in the terms we understand in our politics. It just doesn't work. I always looked a communist dictatorships and fascist dictatorships not on opposite ends of a straight line but more of a circle that doesn't quite close. Both regimes sit next to each other near the ends of the circle that don't quite touch.

It's dumb to you because it's shining a bright and unfavorable light on your orthodoxy.

I agree, totalitarianism comes from both sides, and it doesn't greatly matter if it's left or right leaning. They are both pernicious, they both abhor freedom, and they both bludgeon the other side until groupthink wins out. And yes, with today's hyper-partisanship, we are tending to that, no matter which side of the aisle you argue from.

For help, see the post above yours.
Funny, because I was going to tell you the same thing. Well, actually I was going to connect the dots for you by quoting OL FU in my response. I was also going to counter your "peace loving liberal pussies" comment with a police blotter type of list of violent crimes committed by those "peace loving liberal pussies" of the OWS movement as well.

But, I digress.
Yes...OWS poses a threat toward totalitarianism! Down with those sommofabitch fascisti!!!

I guess you're not a believer in the pen being mightier than the sword.
This is an issue of racial and gender justice types and not liberals and progressives. The type of stuff you saw on the Duke campus after the rape accusations against the lacrosse players came out is starting to gradually creep more into the mainstream. See what happened with Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Freddie Gray etc. See what happened with Laura Kipnis at Northwestern. It's really is getting out of control.
I've said it before, identity politics is becoming what the social issues were for a while up until the recession. The religious right can be laughable and at its peak more powerful than social justice warriors are now, but one thing you have to give them is that they don't try to muzzle their opponents in the same way as the privilege police does.

All you really need to do is look at how corporations and institutions have handled Bill Cosby and Donald Trump. One has raped dozens of women. One commented on illegal citizen rapists.
The white one immediately lost millions of lucrative deals and was roundly censured by the MSM. He was guilty of speaking the truth and committing no crime.
The black one, the rapist, did finally, begrudgingly, after years of secret testimony, hush money settlements, and a more recent floodgate of accusers and the smoking gun, his own admission to intending to drug women for rape... ...finally was kicked off an upcoming NBC project. Meanwhile, institutions like the Smithsonian are still "debating" whether or not to remove him from exhibits. Black businesses like Ben's Chili Bowl in DC are "debating" if they should take down a mural of the black rapist.
I smell a double standard. I smell that the article has merit.
A northwest Ohio municipal judge assigned to a courtroom where civil marriages are performed refused to marry two women less than two weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, the judge’s office confirmed on Wednesday.
Toledo Municipal Judge Allen McConnell was on a three-week rotation assigned to perform civil ceremonies on Monday when Carolyn Wilson and her partner asked to be married. McConnell acknowledged the decision in a Wednesday statement.
“On Monday, July 6, I declined to marry a non-traditional couple during my duties assignment,” he said. “The declination was based upon my personal and Christian beliefs established over many years. I apologize to the couple for the delay they experienced and wish them the best.”
Gen. Greenwald of the New Totalitarian Red Army, responded...

Guys, in the United States in today's context the "left" is WAY worse about it. If you can't see that, you're blind. Or perhaps you've already been bludgeoned into submission.
Though, actually, I would probably say "brainwashed."
