Still Trying to Make Trickle Down Work

Post by kalm »

"Anyone…Anyone………Voodoo Economics".
A number of Republicans have called for the CBO to incorporate what US News & World Report calls a “gimmick” that would result in tax cuts magically paying for themselves in future CBO scores. In fact, it would likely result in the CBO claiming that even deep tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy would result in more revenues coming into the government’s coffers. We could have our cake and eat it, too!

The gimmick is called “dynamic scoring,” and is based on economic models that purport to show that tax cuts unleash so much new economic activity that ultimately, they result in more taxes being collected.

Budget guru Stan Collender, executive vice president of Qorvis Communications, tells Moyers & Company that to a degree both the CBO and Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation already use dynamic scoring. Economists agree that changes in taxation influence how much money individuals and corporations spend. “They just don’t use it to the extent that tax cut proponents want,” says Collender. “And there’s very little substantive evidence to justify the kind of dynamic scoring that they want.”

An opinion shared by most economists:
In an interview with Politico, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) claimed, falsely, that “Our rules in Congress require that we don’t take into consideration behavioral changes or economic effects as a result of tax reform.” He told a business group, “What we want to do is change our measurement so that we can use — people say it’s dynamic scoring. I really prefer to call it reality-based scoring.”

Asked about that characterization, Stan Collender says, “Almost all reputable economists – and past CBO directors from both parties – have rejected the kind of dynamic scoring that Paul Ryan wants out-of-hand. They’ve looked at it, they’ve written about it and they’ve found nothing to support it. What you’ve got to understand is that proponents of this kind of dynamic scoring simply take it on faith.”

From the quoted part of the article:

Budget guru Stan Collender, executive vice president of Qorvis Communications, tells Moyers & Company that to a degree both the CBO and Congress’s Joint Committee on Taxation already use dynamic scoring. Economists agree that changes in taxation influence how much money individuals and corporations spend.

Apparently they've already been using, for years, through multiple administrations, including Obama's, the dynamic scoring. :coffee:

All kalm's bluster is for nothing...it simply boils down to a matter of degree.

There is no way anybody can know that's accurate. We know what happened with respect to deficits WITH the tax cuts. But there is no possible way to know what would've happened WITHOUT the tax cuts.

You're comparing what was actually observed to what someone THINKS would have been observed under another scenario that never occurred.

By the way, I know I'm being ad hominem, but is there ANYBODY here who takes Bill Moyers seriously?

Most of the time I try to avoid this but that guy is a joke. There's not a remotely objective bone in his body.

He's a very solid journalist and has been forever. You should watch his reports sometime rather than be told what to think about him.

What makes you think trickle Down isn't working...?
As best as I can tell its working perfectly

1) Americans who own significant shares of stock has never been concentrated in a smaller group
2) The Gap between the wealthiest Americans and the Middle Class has never been larger
3) The recapturing of American Real Estate (back from the Middle Class) into the hands of the wealthiest is almost complete now...

:coffee:

What else is left to accomplish really..?

The GOP is flush up with great and innovative ideas for the future of our country, trickle down did not work, so they will be giving the idea a different handle, and it will be a very great and innovative handle...

With all the gushing out of great thoughts, how the heck is Congress going to have time to get it all done??

It's been a while but I have watched him many times over my lifetime. He used to be on PBS all the time. That's why I wrote what I wrote about him. He adopts this REALLY thoughtful persona like he's REALLY being "intellectual" then makes it obvious that he's a total hack.

I mean really. To me anybody who takes that guy seriously needs to re-assess.
