There's no question about it, the technology will make mistakes and people will die from it. That said, I bet you WAY less people will die from self-driving cars than from human error (aka. what we have now).

I hope they bring one to Iowa to test with all the farm machinery on the roads, especially in the spring and fall. If it can figure out how to handle that we'll know we're there. And then the govt will come in and fuck it all up.

Interesting questions. If you tell the car where to go when you're drunk can you get a DUI? I would think there would be a GPS tracker that would show where the car is at all times in case it was stolen or an older person takes the car and gets lost. I guess you could track your teenagers and the whereabouts of your spouse.....

How does the car account for faster/slower moving traffic that aren't GPS controlled? What about the fact that Google Maps can be/is way behind on roads being closed/rerouted? How do they account for stop lights? Obstructions in the road such as wild life?

I could see starting with something like an express lane devoted only to autonomous vehicles in the beginning as a training ground, and eventually begin allowing the vehicles into more dynamic situations like city traffic.

It would be pretty cool on a road trip to get your car to the interstate, put on the Google, and kick back for a nap for a while.
