9 WV counties without water after chemical spill

Post by dbackjon »

West Virginia American Water hopes a test Friday morning will give them a better idea about the situation following a chemical leak in Charleston.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin declared a state of emergency Thursday after a chemical leak in Charleston. This included a water ban for West Virginia American Water customers in nine counties.

A spokesperson with West Virginia American Water tells WSAZ.com at 8 a.m. the Corp of Engineers and Dupont will conduct tests at the same time to to see if each test gets the same results. The water company hopes this test will give a better look at the water standards.

WVAW has also been working with a chemist from DuPont and Laura Jordan says he's found that the chemical is leaking at ground level.

Jordan says there is a possibility this leak has been going on for sometime before it was discovered Thursday.

I won't be watching but I'm 100% positive it will be hysterical

My family used to drive through Charleston WV when we went to visit my mom's family in Louisville KY. I recall the place smelling absolutely horribly driving through. Whatever they were emitting in the mid-70s was some nasty stuff. That place was an industrial wasteland.

From what I saw on the news report I saw tonight and on the internet after googling the substance involved (4-methylcyclohexane methanol) it's not even really that dangerous a chemical. In fact as a practical matter it might not be dangerous at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they are causing more of a public health issue by over reacting to the situation than they would by just advising people as to what they know about the risk then letting them make their own decisions as to whether to use the water or not.

http://www.statejournal.com/story/24416 ... s-chemical" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it would take thousands of gallons of water containing the chemical to reach a lethal dosage
I'm not saying it's not bad at all. But I think we have a classic environmental/public health hyperbole situation here. It happens all the time.

Yeah, probably a good idea to only worry about it if it reaches a lethal dosage. :thumb:

The point is that it's not a highly toxic substance. Your toothpaste is probably a lot more toxic than the water supply for that area is right now. I say that because if you ate about 10 tubes of your toothpaste you may get a lethal dose of fluoride. Yet they're telling people they shouldn't brush their teeth or shower with the water. It's possible that it might cause skin irritation but you could tell somebody that if they shower and get skin irritation THEN they can stop showering with the water. I say that but I really doubt that there's enough in the water to cause skin irritation.

This reminds me of the dispersant thing during the BP thing. On the inside of dealing with that thing I could see how ridiculous toxicologists thought it was that people were worried about adverse health effects from it. It's basically like worrying about the toxic effects of Dawn dishwashing liquid in extremely small concentrations. But you had these nuts out there, some with academic credentials, beating the drum for how dangerous the dispersants were so you had to act like you gave crap. So much of what officials do is about public perception rather than reality.

Like everybody knew darn well that there was no health hazard for consumers of seafood from the Gulf during that incident too. But you could actually read guidance about how it'd been learned from historical experience that no matter how much you told people there wasn't a hazard a lot of them weren't going to believe you so you might as well act like there is a hazard. It fell under the category of "Cultural" lessons learned from previous oil spill experience.

And I suspect that is to some extent what's going on here. There are probably people on the inside who see this as much ado about very little but they know they can't say that publicly and have to act like the water supply is contaminated with a lethal concentration of cyanide.

I've heard about people in the region panicking, emptying grocery store, walmart, convenience store, etc shelves of bottled water and just about every type of drink.

Prime example of people failing to adequately prep. If you don't have at least a 2 week supply of drinking water for every person in the household on hand at all times then you are wrong. That'a minimum of about a gallon per avg male, 3 quarts per avg woman, and maybe a 1/2 gallon per child. So for your avg family of 4 that would be about 40 gallons.

Myself (its just me) I always keep around 20 gallons on hand (mix of cases & jugs). If something similar happened where I live I don't even start worrying unless it hits the 2 week mark. I keep the above mentioned supply of water, 2-3 weeks of food on hand, a shitload of batteries & candles, a generator, 8 guns, a couple thousand rounds among other things. But I'm not a prepper or a real big gun guy. I consider the above to be a very basic minimum.

I don't do that but you made me think of something. I don't know what it's like in West Virginia but here where I live if one water source was contaminated with something I'm concerned about I could just get surface water from another source then filter and boil it if I REALLY needed something to drink.

Surely there must be other sources of water in that area besides that river that the chemical spilled into.

Of course, me, after reading about that chemical, I'd probably just go ahead and use water from the water supply. I really would.

You're right about that- except the poisonous stuff that's in toothpaste is also being added to water supplies nation wide.
