You would be correct. 10 years ago I knew virtually nothing about "libertarianism". After doing some research it became abundantly clear that I am, in fact, a Libertarian and not a true Republican.

I don't think AZ used it as a cop-out, I think he just didn't know about the ideology/party and once he did he realized that it was more in line with his values than the traditional Republican party and he made the switch. From what I remember of his posts he's always been fiscally conservative and socially liberal which is pretty consistent with libertarian values.
