Mexico's Growing Middle Class

Post by Cap'n Cat »

You go, Mexico!!!

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/53598274/ns/w ... otruRY1DJx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Education. More sophisticated work. Higher pay. This is the development formula Mexico has been seeking for decades. But after the free-market wave of the 1990s failed to produce much more than low-skilled factory work, Mexico is finally attracting the higher-end industries that experts say could lead to lasting prosperity. Here, in a mostly poor state long known as one of the country’s main sources of illegal immigrants to the United States, a new Mexico has begun to emerge.

Dozens of foreign companies are investing, filling in new industrial parks along the highways. Middle-class housing is popping up in former watermelon fields, and new universities are waving in classes of students eager to study engineering, aeronautics and biotechnology, signaling a growing confidence in Mexico’s economic future and what many see as the imported meritocracy of international business. In a country where connections and corruption are still common tools of enrichment, many people here are beginning to believe they can get ahead through study and hard work.

The automotive industry has been Mexico’s brightest spot so far. In many ways, central Mexico has already surpassed Detroit. There are now more auto-industry jobs in Mexico than in the entire American Midwest. At least 100,000 jobs have been added in Mexico since 2010, according to a recent Brookings Institution report, and General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Audi and Volkswagen have all announced expansion plans, with nearly $10 billion to be invested over the next several years, mainly in a 400-mile corridor from Puebla to Aguascalientes.

Good news. A strong Mexican economy will certainly cool down the illegal immigration flow to a trickle. :twocents:

I see nothing bad in this.

However, US outsourcing is a major driver here and I thought that was a lefty bad word?

Not with this lefty. Stability on our borders is something we should all desire. The days of subjugating third world places is long gone as it does nothing but perpetuate a bad status quo, creating problems for us eventually.

I want to see all nations successful and peaceful. My opinion only.

Hey, I agree. Economics isn't a zero sum game - someone else's success isn't automatically another one's loss. A stronger Mexico, and a stronger world, is where we want to go anyway. A rising ocean lifts everyone, including us (note, that is a not an endoresement of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, it's just an expression).

I agree. Every unemployed American will be able to sneak across the border to tend to their lawns and clean their hotel rooms.

Wait a minute, so does this mean that globalization and NAFTA might be doing good for the people of Mexico? I thought the kkkapitalist robber baron free trade agreements were about having access to 8 year old wage slaves.

Also, what about the environment? Can the planet afford the expanding middle classes in China and Mexico?

Yep. Pretty soon they'll have to turn the border stations around. :coffee:

This is indeed great. Like Ivy said, this is the only way to curb illegal immigration.

Contrary to popular belief, Mexicans aren't risking their lives walking across the desert for days to take advantage of US welfare. They're doing it for jobs to provide for their families. If they're able to do that by staying with their families and not commuting across the largest desert in North America... they'll do that.

Pwns wrote:Wait a minute, so does this mean that globalization and NAFTA might be doing good for the people of Mexico?
Not really that simple. Yes, it has definitely benefited some. And it has definitely hurt some. I don't think it's fair to say that it is doing good for the people of Mexico... though, it's also not completely fair to say it's doing bad for them either.

Like many things... the middle class and wealthy benefit... but, the poor are fucked over tremendously.

This. It's all at the expense of American jobs and the American middle class.

I noticed that the article doesn’t say that the Mexican people believe they can get ahead through welfare, EBT cards, “free” healthcare, and “free” cell phones. Who would have thought?

And finally, I can ask my cousins for money instead of the other way around.

Of course I would prefer jobs here, but realistically, a lot of that is not going to happen in today's global market.

Capitalism ensures that producers will go to wherever they can make the most profit.

Unless you want to limit free trade, erect tariffs, etc, this is reality.

Translation: Realistically that's not going to happen when the uppity American worker needs $55/hour to turn a wrench while the Mexican worker will gladly do it for $2.50/hr. :coffee:

Actually, yes they are.

The ability to send remesas home is one part of the equation, but the allure of "residencia" and citizenship for their children is at the very least an equal player. We have MANY citizens and LPRs who live in Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala who have no intention of ever living in the US or becoming actual Americans, because they can enjoy the low cost of living at home while enjoying the benefits of citizenship in the form of various social programs.

BTW- did you know that more than 20% of the entire Salvadoran economy is based on remittances from the US, and that a full 1/3 of the entire Salvadoran population actually resides in the US?

One day I will talk about TPS- temporary protected status- if anyone wants to be enlightened about how good intentions ALWAYS wind up being exploited by not only the beneficiaries but also the politicians.
