But to win a seat on the Houston Community College Board of Trustees in a district predominantly comprised of African-American voters, Wilson, a conservative Republican, led voters to believe he was black.
According to CBS affiliate KHOU-TV, Wilson's direct mail campaign included a flier with smiling black faces he says he found on the Internet. "Please vote for our friend and neighbor Dave Wilson," the accompanying text read.
In another flier, the text said he had been endorsed by Ron Wilson, a popular black former state representative. But the Ron Wilson who endorsed him was Dave's cousin Ron, not the ex-lawmaker.
"He's a nice cousin," Wilson told the network, chuckling. "We played baseball in high school together."
Nevermind his cousin lives in Bloomfield, Iowa, some 940 miles from Houston.

I've said this before...identity politics is much stronger in America than racism or sexism. If Hillary runs the people who will vote for her because she is a woman will outnumber those who would never vote for a woman 20:1.

We get the elected officials that we deserve. If you're a single issue voter, and your single issue is race, you should at least take the time to verify the race of the guy you intend to vote for.

So Bruce Austin never found a way to put out there that Wilson was a white guy?
This says a lot more about how little the average American pays attention to the political process.

Blacks are about 12% of the US population so it's not too far off (5%). Obama did much better in the Dem primaries with men than he did with women. I think the 20:1 ratio is a little high, but I do think not only are there more people who would vote for a woman than wouldn't, I acutally think there are even more people who would vote for a woman out of guilt of not wanting to vote against a woman.mrklean wrote:So why do we here, Black people only vote for Obama because he is Black?Pwns wrote:I've said this before...identity politics is much stronger in America than racism or sexism. BTW, I assume you are not questioning that a HUGE number of blacks only voted for Obama because he was black. If you can show me data that blacks voted for another Dem candidate in a Dem primary in the kind of skewed numbers they voted for Obama, I will admit I'm wrong.

Only a 1/3 of AA who can vote do vote. That number has not changed in over 30 years. Trust me, we try to raise these numbers every 4 years, with little luck.89Hen wrote:Blacks are about 12% of the US population so it's not too far off (5%). Wait. Are you saying that Obama has not drawn a higher percentage of black voters to the polls? I find that hard to believe.mrklean wrote:Only a 1/3 of AA who can vote do vote. Me too. I just heard somewhere in the last few days that the AA vote % had been going up since Obama ran.CAA Flagship wrote:Wait. Are you saying that Obama has not drawn a higher percentage of black voters to the polls? I find that hard to believe.mrklean wrote:

5 million MORE AA's voted in 2008 than had EVER voted before. Why do you suppose that was? And whom do you suppose they voted for? You know, it's possible that Austin didn't know that his opponent was white. He might have just figured that as a Dem in a negro area, he had an automatic win against any Republican.DSUrocks07 wrote:So Bruce Austin never found a way to put out there that Wilson was a white guy?

Agreed. It was the "Democrat" thing more than the "Black" thing. Blacks have voted by reflex around 90% plus or minus a few percentage points for the Democratic candidate for President for a very long time now. If the Republicans were to nominate a Black he or she would not get anything close to that among the Black population. So why do we here, Black people only vote for Obama because he is Black?
Remember Obama is a Dem
Obama being on the ballot did increase Black turnout some and did make it a little higher percentage. But if he'd have had a "R" by his name the majority of Blacks would have voted against him.

Not all things equal... If he switches to the Republican Party and campaigned on their platform... blacks would not vote for him overwhelmingly. If he simply switched parties, but campaigned on the same issues and positions... they probably would vote overwhelmingly for him.JohnStOnge wrote: But if he'd have had a "R" by his name the majority of Blacks would have voted against him.
Blacks didn't turn out overwhelmingly for Alan Keyes any time he ran for office. And, it's not simply because he had an R next to his name.

88% of it's a party thing. The other 12% is racists voting for the guy because of his skin color. The 5,000,000 NEW AA voters were there because of his skin color.mrklean wrote:So you are saying its more party and not race?JohnStOnge wrote:

I still dont see why this is a problem. the 5 million new voters would have voted Dem anyway. I can see if they Voted for Allen Keyes (R) who is a Conk. Then that would voting for race.AZGrizFan wrote:88% of it's a party thing. The other 12% is racists voting for the guy because of his skin color.
