Manning acquited of aiding and espionage

Post by Grizalltheway »

An Army judge on Tuesday acquitted Pfc. Bradley Manning of aiding the enemy by disclosing a trove of secret U.S. government documents, a striking rebuke to military prosecutors who argued that the largest leak in U.S. history had assisted al-Qaeda.

The judge, Col. Denise Lind, found Manning guilty of most of the more than 20 crimes he was charged with. She also acquitted him of one count of the espionage act that stemmed from his leak of a video that depicted a fatal U.S. military airstrike in Farah, Afghanistan

The eight-week trial offered a gripping account of Manning’s transformation from a shy soldier who deployed to Baghdad as an intelligence analyst in 2009 to a mole for the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, which disclosed more than 700,000 documents Manning gathered

But still convicted on all other charges. He'll do a lot of time.

He is a coward and is getting almost what he deserves........he should do more time than he is getting. At least Leavenworth isn't a picnic party like most of our prisoners get. :coffee:

He will still need to find one of these when he gets there:

Easy....if he believed what he had was that important, he could have gone about it the right way and taken it up the chain of command to get released. He was too chicken shit to deal with the normal process and will now pay the price for it and should. All he had to do was his duty and he would have been fine. :twocents:

The Clinton's gave away and sold more defense secrets then Manning and Snowden combined...

Wonder if they'll cover that in the upcoming Hillary mini-series

I want to say right off the bat that this case is completely different that the latest leaking asshole, this guy was enlisted. The point I was making is, he shouldn't have released it, period. He isn't smart enough nor looking at the bigger picture enough to make that call. I am not going to argue the merits of what he released, it is irrelevant. If he was a private citizen then maybe we could argue what he released but he was an enlisted service member and subject to different rules.

I shudder to think what would happen today with some of the ww2 stuff we found out about after the fact. Would people like this guy of released the start of D-Day as too many people would die? Would he of savotaged the nuclear bomb to save civilians? I still say the pussification of America continues. More and more people don't understand the word honor, duty, hero etc. This guy was none of those. He swore an oath not to release information and he did not uphold that oath. :coffee:

Way more important than Zimmerman's trial... Way less attention... Sad.

That is the important part. Not that he was found guilty on the lesser charges - but, that he was acquitted on aiding the enemy. Will be important in determining how future cases similar in nature will be tried.

I think he previously pled guilty to certain counts that added up to 20 years. He still had a number of additional charges that were ruled on today.

Like in the Snowden case, there is a process in place to deal with things like this. EVEN if you know nothing will come of it, you must follow that chain. Afterwards, if you feel nothing has been done or is being done then, I say, go public with the information. Perception is everything. The perception there would be that Manning saw things that he felt were wrong, he brought it to the attention of his COs and the IG. He only acted after he felt the information he provided was being ignored.

Once again I ask what did this guy really uncover that was really damning? And how is just releasing every secret document you can get your hands on whistle blowing? Typically one has to uncover some kind of wrongdoing to be considered a whistle blower and if your documents have the names of assets you black out those names. Manning didn't do either and probably didn't even read half of the documents that he released. He should have gotten the hint when the newspapers he wrote to refused the information. But no, he took it to an Australian computer hacker out to make a name for himself.

No, him keeping his mouth shut would have been the cowardly thing to do. He may be a criminal, but he's certainly not a coward.
