Um...no.
An extrapolation of transliterating Hebrew words with a clear translation as "normal" words as names when the entire history of the synagogue/Church has not done so is dubious at best. Additionally, even if that were the case, using the conjunctive vav as they do to "seal the deal" is a HUGE stretch.
Obama is a horrible President, but this is nothing more than fear-mongering, and gives the Church a bad name. We don't need this pandering to the lowest common denominator.

I don't know about an "atheist," but there is evidence that the Antichrist will come from somewhere in Eastern Europe. That leaves out people born in EITHER the United States OR Africa, whatever you position on the useless Birther debate....Pwns wrote:Everyone knows the antichrist will be a white male atheist.

You're wrong for trying to discuss the translation of the Bible when you read and study it out of context.

The Anti-Christ referred to in the Book of Revelation was Nero. Nero's gemantra equaled 666 and every first century Christian would have readily understood this.

So if Nero was the Anti-Christ, is Revelation worthless as a book? Does this mean Christ already came back? Or is never coming?
Re: Obama is the AntiChrist
Didn't say Revelation was a worthless book, but the book was written for members of a brutally oppressed first century Christian Church for the purpose of offering hope to them. The book was written in "code" which would have been readily understood by Christians, but not by Romans or pagans. For this reason, Revelation includes numerous symbols based on the Old Testament, which were texts readily known to Christians. Without getting into all the details, the book foretells that the Christian Church will overcome the oppression of the Roman Empire and, in fact, triumph over the empire. As such, the conversion of the Roman Empire to Catholicism under the Emperor Constantine represents a significant fulfillment of what was foretold in Revelation.dbackjon wrote:JoltinJoe wrote:The Anti-Christ referred to in the Book of Revelation was Nero. Revelation certainly speaks also of end-of-time events, including the Second Coming, but to read the book as a futuristic narrative of events prior to the end of time misses the point of the book. The Anti-Christ was Nero (whose gementra equaled both 666 (as Neron) and 616 (as Nero), both numbers which are found in the earliest written texts of Revelation). The Whore of Babylon (on the city of seven hills) is the Roman Empire. The two prophets killed in the streets of the "great city" were Peter and Paul -- this event had already occurred when Revelation was written. Indeed, Nero too had already died, but the Anti-Christ was continued in his successors.
The whole point of the book was to give hope to the Christian community that, despite its suffering, it would overcome and convert the empire. That was the audience to whom it was written, and that was the message that they needed to hear. That community certainly had no need for a blow-by-blow description of the end of the world.

j/k Thanks for the response. So didn't the early Christians (apostles, etc) believe that Christ would quickly return?
Re: Obama is the AntiChrist
Yes, many did; although not all. For its part, the Catholic Church has never officially taken a position on when Christ will return, extending back to the first century.dbackjon wrote:JoltinJoe wrote:

O, btw, "Babylon" was a code word used by the early church leaders to refer to Rome. Thus, when Peter and Paul wrote they were in Babylon, members of the church would have understood that to mean they were in Rome. Peter and Paul were both men wanted by Roman authorities and they had to be careful about being explicit about where they were.
Actually, an interesting fact about the first century church was that Nero's Circus, where so many of the early Christians were martyred, including Peter, is now the location of Vatican City. How's that for a symbol of "placing your enemies under your feet?" When Constantine converted to Christianity, he directed the construction of a church over the spot where St. Peter was said to have been buried. Thus, Peter is the foundation, the Rock, on which the Church was built -- both figuratively and literally.

They wouldn't have understood much. They were a pathetic, ignorant lot who were more likely to be pagan, Jew (religion) or one of hundreds of other bullshit religious sects vying for the souls and cash of the scared shitless masses.
Because the bible is such a joke as a record of history and the development of religion, this opened the door for the catholic church to pretty much invent its history. Christianity really started in the 3rd century thanks to powerful politicians and tyrants who saw the value in selling salvation to pathetic, ignorant people in return for their obedience and labor.
You'll notice "Jesus" or God never appeared and worked their miracles in an advanced and literate culture at the time like China. Think of it...millions upon millions of literate, advanced people who could have spread the word of the lord with incredible efficiency and accuracy. They would have wrote everything down, millions of times, in clear legible text for succeeding generations to learn from and appreciate.
