We need a political "do not call" list

Post by JohnStOnge »

You know what I'm talking about. Election time comes and the phone rings every few minutes with a political call. It's that time now in Louisiana with the Republican primary. STOP already!

We really do need a list we can get on where political campaigns are NOT allowed to call us.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Ok you work on political campaigns. Does that crap really help? I mean...me...it just aggravates the heck out of me. No WAY I'm going to vote for somebody because of one of those calls. Probably won't change what I'm going to do. But the only possibility of change is change in the wrong direction for those who call.

reminding people to get out and vote does much more good than harm. as for what we call "persuasion calls" they work, depending on the script, at a rate of around 5%... but since the entire field operation is all about the margins... it makes perfect sense to do it.

You know that's a good angle. But remember, the principle is you can do whatever you want until you directly and definitely infringe upon someone else. When you are making repeated, unsolicited calls to someone you're infringing upon them. It's perfectly consistent with my philosophy to say that government should do something to prevent it just as it is to say government legitimately say people can't come stand in front of your house and scream into bullhorns all night so you can't sleep.

Giving you a phone call isn't anywhere near the same thing as standing in front of your house screaming into a bullhorn all night so you can't sleep.

If phone calls make you angry... disconnect your phone line. Don't whine about the governement not stepping in to regulate who can call you.

You're an old dude, though... so, I'm assuming you have some irrational attachment to your landline and disconnecting it isn't an option.

political speech is some of the most sacred in the Constitution...

not going to get laws passed infringing upon political speech.

more to the point - you are a registered voter - that is a public list.

You can simply tell the caller to place you on their internal "do not call list"... downside for you is... every party and every campaign has their own list - they either buy them from the party, or they acquire their own from a list vendor... either way... you're on a lot of lists.

I wish I were joking... however, having tried to calm and console a terrified volunteer who, while out door-knocking had some psychopath sic his Rottweiler at her when she tried to canvass his house... and having talked to the police 2-3 times/cycle about threats made against our phonebankers... I've lost a lot of my sense of humor about it (especially after what happened it Tucson...)

It's odd, they never call me. Could be the lack of a land line. :coffee:

I can deal with the calls if it is before 8pm. I would rip their private part off if I could when they call after that.

you are 100% right - this is THE fastest way to get them off the phone - however - too early in the campaign - they'll nag you to volunteer a lot.

I'm surprised you can do that...what if someone doesn't have unlimited talk time (not even sure if that exists as an option)? You are costing them money.

Wait...those government (tax payer) sponsored free phones with 200 minutes of free time...they'd be the PERFECT list for a democrat.

TTBF, I've just made you rich. Set up a deal with those free phone companies and get them to sell you their list. Even better...have the company not count those minutes towards the person's limit. Call them before their local (you should be able to narrow down each person's location) and national elections...get out the uneducated voter.

You're welcome.

I think I got one of those fuckers calling me for Rehberg or Tester. They can call 87 times a day, if I don't recognize the # I wont answer it.
