American Moderates Disappearing Fast....

Post by Cap'n Cat »

...and it isn't healthy as the country becomes more and more polarized. Note the STEEP jump in Conkunism right after 2008! Wonder why????!!! Also, note the steady decline of both Conks and Mods during W's terms.

SeaGee's thread got me thinking about Conks and Progressives.

Lots of other good graphs in this. Conkservatives are the largest ideological group in the U.S. and that's understandable...and good, IMO. No one (except Bronco and native and STD1990) could thrive in an environment either wholly Conkunist or wholly Enlightened Progressive. The Cap'n is proud to be in the latter minority keeping checks and balances on the former!

The real problem is when 21% of the population is liberal but 90+% of the media is liberal.

The founding fathers set up the media as a watchdog, not an advocacy vehicle, and in 2008 in particular the media played a huge role in getting Obama elected by failing to vet him. I fully expect the same thing to happen this summer and into the fall.

The country is undeniably "center-right" but you'd never know it by the media.

:suspicious:

First, P, the founding fathers set up the media?? Can you elaborate?

Second, re the "liberal" media, I have said for years that, if Conks had a message that people actually desired, they would have no problem getting it across...through whatever media. Instead, too often, their message and proposals are just plain out there and weird, not to mention backward (as with women) and regressive. Americans do not want to go back to the malt shoppe in downtown Dixon, IL, 1948, as Santorum Gingrich, Barbour, W, Quayle, Hannity, O'Reilly and Limbaugh do.

Not to put words in his mouth, but I think he meant set them up so they COULD be a watchdog by giving them the "Freedom of the Press".

Freedom of the Press... without it the media would be state run and only a propaganda vehicle.

Gotcha now.

According to you and Hen and Limbaugh and other Conks here, it already is state run and a tool for propaganda!!

*******

Perspective on this liberal media stuff, men:

If you remember correctly, the media was the tool of Conkunism and business interests and the military for a vast majority of our nation's existence, apart from a few spare periods of "liberalism" in the name of public safety and enfranchisement. The roil and upheaval of the 1960's was the greatest thing to happen in American society, ever. After that, businessmen, the military and politicians were held to much more strict account for their misdeeds, something that continues to this day in even stricter form. I don't ever see it going back to the way it was, either, and, thankfully so. Remember articles and headlines and bias, for example, from the Birmingham and Jackson newspapers in the 50s and 60s? Think we'll ever go there again? The 1960's reversed the polar magnetism from the old to the new.

The world becomes more liberal each and every hour and the media is simply a reflection of that.

Can you look yourself in the mirror Cappy and tell me that the big 3 + CNN have been objective reporters since BHO came on the scene? Throw out Fox, we know they're far right already.

Point is, most of us have more access to "news" via more methods these days than ever before and any and every writer, no matter how objective they claim to be, will inject their personal bias into their reports. There are too many folks out here with malleable play-doh minds that can be shifted around easily based on some deft reporting by one side or the other posited as objective facts. :twocents:

Not just those 4 but MSNBC, PBS, NPR, CNBC, Reuters, NYT, LAT, Wash Post, Tribune Co's, etc.etc.etc.

That's the reason FNC's ratings are so high, not because they are the best, but that they're the only network or media outlet save for the WSJ OP/ED that even gives a passing hint of fairness to conservatives.

They were the same before Obama. Again, Conks have failed to get their message across to everyone, likely because it is exclusive of too many people. The liberal media figured it out long ago. More power to them.

He already made a valid point: The news reflects who we are.

Conks, like religion, are losing the ideological battle. The only admirable aspect of conkunism is fiscal prudence, otherwise you're all a bunch of fucking cavemen.

Don't think you can blame Obama as much as you can just say this is a result of the economic crisis. The hard line supply-siders and Keynesians both come out foaming at the mouth with their own theories as why the bottom fell out of the system and impressionable people eat it up. Meanwhile the bigger problems are either not addressed or are not addressed in a way they should be.

1) Health care costs are out of control. Cutting medicare benefits is not a solution and neither is transferring the costs to the government. We just don't have enough doctors to take care of the volume of medical problems and to carry out clinical trials needed to get drugs into the market. We have to invest in more residency programs, period.

2) The government has to help industries like technology, pharma, and aerospace innovate instead of continuing to obsess over how to make the manufacturing process more efficient. Apple didn't make its comeback finding more efficient ways to make its products, they did it by coming up with new stuff. Ditto with Germany's manufacturing.

3) Education has to be fixed. America has no problem producing home-grown evolutionary biologists and environmental scientists but we have a dismal record of producing engineers and computer scientists and physicists and actual useful human capital. Steve Jobs told Obama that he moved a plant offshore not because American labor was too expensive but because we don't have the engineers that he needed. Also, it is insane to insist that gym teachers make the same salary as AP Physics or AP Calculus teachers.

Those are my issues and I'm sticking with 'em. :coffee:

As for the media, it isn't liberal or conservative...it's corporate and for the status quo and stability.

Yes, good stuff, Powny.

Regarding your thoughts on education, yesterday, I was watching a piece on Andrea Mitchell Reports in which she spoke with a 17 yr old about an award he won for his investigationa into breast cancer.

http://video.msnbc.msn.com/mitchell-rep ... /#46735982" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Watch it. At about 1:55 in, it shows all the finalists (I'm assuming) and what's astounding is that there were virtually no WASPs in the group. They're all Asian and Indian and Pakistani and such. Now, Cap'n Cat is no Nazi and all the kids ARE Americans, but I have to question the motivations of "WASP" kids and their parents. Not necessarily making any judgments, just an observation. The country is full of Criminology and Fashion Design and "Communications" majors, but why are white kids not pursuing technical degrees? Just axin'.
