I'm going! I'll only stay long enough to vote. I'll leave when all the platform crap starts.

I wouldn't miss it. It is interesting and entertaining. There are a lot of evangelical/Jesus freak types in my area. Always interesting to hear them foam at the mouth about gay marriage and abortion. It will be interesting to see who wins my caucus location. It won't be Mitt. Ron Paul might. It will be interesting to see if the churchies coalesce around Santorum like the polls are indicating or if they split their vote between him and Bachmann.

seems like they are breaking to santorum at the moment... likely where your location will go.

I don't know what will happen. We haven't gotten the attention like we did four. I live in a small, rural community of 2000 people. Every candidate was in town at least once doing their town hall meetings. I think Pawlenty, Bachman and Santorum are the only ones that have stopped here this time and I didn't go see either one of them because they both suck. It's actually kind of disappointing. It's always been interesting to see them in person and how they interact with the crowd. I would have loved the opportunity to ask Mitt Romney if we would fire Gina McCarthy at EPA since she was one of his advisors when he was gov.

Heard on the radio that the 2008 GOP caucuses had 0 black participants, and a large majority were over 45. I'm sure it would be largely similar in MT, but it did make me chuckle.

I'm back from the caucus. What a fucked up mess. Our county chair is a very nice guy but he doesn't know how to run a meeting at all.

Here were the results at my caucus:

Romney 10%
Perry 33%
Paul 10%
Bachmann 8%
Gingrich 7%
Santorum 33%
Huntsman 0%

Yes these add up to 101% due to rounding.

Perry was very organized. Had 2 guys there that drove up from Texas to work the crowd before and one of them gave the 5 minute speech on behalf of Perry.

I thought Bachmann would do better. The churchies went to Perry and Santorum. This matched up exactly with something I heard on the radio today from a state R party official - that their internal polling was showing a swing for Perry and Santorum with the evangelical group.

NBC Gives Platform to Professor Who Called Iowans 'Meth Addicts' and 'Elderly Waiting to Die'
By Kyle Drennen | January 03, 2012 | 11:19

Following correspondent Andrea Mitchell referring to Iowa as "Too white, too evangelical, too rural" on Sunday's NBC Nightly News, on Monday's Rock Center, correspondent Willie Geist spoke to University of Iowa Professor Stephen Bloom, who similarly fretted: "It's basically a white, very, very Christian state."

Geist explained how Bloom has been "in hiding" since writing a scathing article in The Atlantic attacking Iowa as, "An assortment of waste-toids and meth addicts with pale skin and rotted teeth or those who quixotically believe, like Little Orphan Annie, that the sun will come out tomorrow." Bloom also ranted: "Those who stay in rural Iowa are often the elderly waiting to die."Describing Bloom's column as "nearly 6,000 words painting a mostly ugly picture, arguing that Iowa is not representative of America," Geist did challenge the journalism professor's offensive generalizations: "Are you really surprised that Iowans are upset when they read something like that?" Bloom arrogantly asserted: " Yes. You know what? It's important to say those things. It's an impression of what I get in the state of Iowa after 20 years....I'm sorry. This is the way I do it. This is called satire. This is called parody."

Geist followed up: "Do you regret painting with such a broad brush?" Bloom replied: "No, no. I'm sorry that people don't get it. I knew I was stepping into something, absolutely. But isn't that what journalists ought to be doing?"

Near the end of the segment, Geist actually portrayed Bloom as a victim: "Perhaps the most deeply felt insult was to Iowans' faith. Bloom, who is Jewish, writes about the state's, quote, "in-your-face religion." He said he went into hiding because his wife received an anti-Semitic phone call. Do you fear for your life?" Bloom responded: "People tell me I shouldn't go back to Iowa." Geist wondered: "Will you?" Bloom declared: "Yeah. That's where I teach. That's where I've taught for 20 years. I'm not going to be bullied into leaving Iowa. This is my home."

Talking to host Brian Williams moments later, Geist tried to defend Bloom: "And we should point out, by the way, Professor Bloom does not deny that the people here are nice. He just says that it's a place that can be improved. By all accounts he's an active member of the community, goes to the Hawkeye football games, has lived here 20 years, raised his family. He says he loves the place, he just wants to help make it better."

Ok, that video was awesome :notworthy: and exactly how I'd wanna defend Eastern Washington, but honestly, isn't the professor describing most of rural America? It's satire and has truth.

Part of the problem with Iowa and NH is that they are held in Jan. Should have left them in Feb like they used to be, after all the bowl games, NFL playoffs, & Super Bowl so they wouldn't interfere with football.
