Catholic Church and having babies

Post by OSBF »

Heard some family news this morning that just doesn't sound right to me. There has to be more to the story than I'm hearing. My nephew and his young BEAUTIFUL wife go to a large and prominent church in Joliet. They've been married I think 3-4 years, and have mutually agreed that they do not want to have children. She says it's because she doesn't want to destroy her made for sin body. Might be serious, might not, dunno.

Anyway, my bro sends mom an e-mail that they are about to be kicked out of the church if they don't start having babies. Have met with the priest several times. He says that unless they are for some reason medically unable to have children or if it is just god's will that they do not have children, they are living in sin by having sex without making babies.

Is this guy a loon or is this pretty common in the church?

I can see the Church doing that. If we don't reproduce, their revenue stream stops when the kids we didn't have aren't there to plunk down their hard earned greenbacks in the collection plate. You gotta pay to play!

Meanwhile, any pics of the sister-in-law. Naked?

Unfortunately, no naked pics. I'd say she's more cute than hot. She holds herself in pretty high reguard.

I've never heard of this before. I know there's some sort of doctrine on "expanding the territory" sort of thing, but I've never heard it taken to this extreme level.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but isn't there something in the Catholic Church about having sex only for reproduction purposes (hence their aversion to any form of birth contriol)? If so, that's the only angle I could see...they are willingly choosing to sin by boinking with no intention of creating offspring....but hey, I don't know dik about the Catholic Church (excepty what D1B tells me)....

Yeah, I think that you're spot on there with the doctrine.

But my question is about the actual enforcement. I've never heard of the doctrine being enforced to this degree.

Is this priest a loon or just following protocol?

My guess is he's the Barney Fife of Catholic priests....

Well YOU are not Catholic so I assumed your brother or his son weren't either. I've also never heard of a Catholic church being described as prominent, besides Cathedrals or Bascillicas, and those aren't usually actual parishes where something like this would be known..

I've NEVER heard of such a thing. And how would this priest even justify poking his nose into other peoples business? And how would this priest actually do this? You can't stop someone from attending mass, getting kicked out of the Catholic church is called excommunication. If the Pope is actually going to excommunicate someone in this case, it would be the dumbass priest.

If this is true, tell them to change parishes. Problem solved.

My brother married a catholic girl from the big city that he met in college. I don't know if he ever formally converted or not, but they raised the kids catholic.

Yes, it is a cathedral, I think. They have a high school and a "college". Former parish of Cardinal Bernadine(Chicago). He still attends there somewhat regularily. He married my brother and his wife back in the day when he was a priest.

excuse the f out of me for not being fluent in the lingo

he's a cardinal, thought it might be a sin of some sort to refer him a priest

i'm not going to "tell" them to do anything

If I did, it would be to find a nice Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist etc etc etc church and go there.

Relax dude. I'm just trying to understand your story.

So the Cardinal of Chicago, who attends mass regularly at his old parish, is telling your nephew that he's "livin in sin" by not having babies. Excuse me.

So much ignorance.....so much.... :ohno:

If a couple is married in the Catholic Church, they must profess that they are open to procreation...

If they never have kids, no one is going to check in the bed room...no one is going to at some point come and ask "Where are the kids"...except, possibly, the expectant grand parents...

Now, if they did profess that they are open to procreation to get married...and then, at a later date, for some unknown reason, decided to publicly declare that they are opposed and will not be open to procreation...then, yes, they have renounced a vow and the Church is within its rights to kick them out...

Wow....what a concept....holding someone responsible for an agreement....

I know that flies in the face of your entire belief system OSBF...that no one should be responsible, that society should simply allow people to do "what feels good"...

But that's how we roll...

The Catholic Cathedral in Chicago is Holy Name Cathedral. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago as well as the Holy Name parish.

Cardinal Francis George is the Archbishop who heads the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Monsignor Dan Mayall is the pastor of Holy Name Parish. I find it highly doubtful that Msgn. Mayall is personally poking into his parishioner's bedrooms and kicking them out for using birth control. I've had some contacts with him over the years and believe I make my observation on personal knowledge. The only reason he would discuss a parishioner's personal use of birth control with him/her is if the parishioner engaged him in discussion over the matter for some reason, and I would gather, if he became aware of such use, he would say nothing other than to suggest that the parishioner refrain him or herself from communion while engaging in personal reflection on the matter.

no, not Cardinal Bernadine, I didn't say that, go back and re-read

a priest that leads a small group they are part of, a small group for young/newly married couples

He's all over the ass of any couple married longer than a couple of years that are without children. My niece and nephew made the mistake of stating that they had no intention of having children, just because they don't want to.

Then it was game on from there.

As related to me from my mother from my brother.

Sounds weird to me, that's why I asked.

Sorry, I'll never do that again.

Didn't realize you fuck sticks were so up-tight and defensive.

The young lady is not doing her duty. The Catholic church is dying...Islam is growing.

Or maybe the preist is wondering if he can get into your nephew's pants.

I understand that.

I've never heard of it being enforced this way.

Obviously, neither have a couple of other posters here that ARE catholic.

That's why I asked the question, seems really weird to me, there has to be more to the story. Sounds like my niece and nephew pissed somebody off they shouldn't have. This reeks of church politics.

Ahhh....agree to sign up for a game with rules, ignore the rules (wink, nudge...we are Catholics, but we don't like the rules for being Catholics, so we will say we're Catholics and then hope everyone just doesn't act like a Catholic).

Of course, we'll blame the refs when they blow a whistle.
