Not nanny-statism. Just liability avoidance as was stated above. Also, this is usually just a function of school policy.

In terms of actual regulation, given the rising incidence of these allergies, I would require schools to have epinephrine on hand and the staff trained in its use.

I don't see this as a statist or big government issue at all. This is just expecting government institutions to use a little common sense and prevention. Nobody argues with having rules against bringing knives or dangerous chemicals to a school, bringing dangerous allergens should be no different.

I agree. If a kid can't handle a spoonful of peanut butter, do we really want that kind of person eventually reproducing and contributing to the gene pool? Hell no! Darwin Forever!

Used to be extremely rare for anyone to make it to their 60s with no dead spouses or kids due to disease. Now that we've pretty much cured everything except for cancer the secondary issues are popping up...

At least part of it is the Internet and 24 hour news. We just hear a lot more news today.

There's something to be said for that. The other thing is that doctors and teachers know more now than they did 20 and 30 years ago.

Back then, a lot of kids were classified as just dumb when they had a learning disability that is now nurtured with tailored education, occupational therapy, etc. I am very thankful that my son with Aspergers did not grow up when I did. He's smart as a whip but would have hated school and been left behind if he went when I did.

I don't remember know one single kid growing up that had a peanut allergy.
Thanks, that's where I was going too. :thumb:

Kids need to walk away from the PS3 and Wii's from time to time, go outside and build up a freakin' immune system like most of us did. Why don't we just put them in a bubble with elbow/knee pads and helmets and send them out to play? :coffee:
Truth. Ours only come inside to eat (sometimes), study, and sleep. They are outdoor kids, can't stand being cooped up. We were the same way.

Just liability avoidance
Yeah that's a big factor nowadays. Way too much so, I think. On one hand I think we need a civil court system to allow for settling of disputes and for people recovering compensation for legitimate damage and truly irresosponsible behavior. On the other hand I think it's gone way too far.

Don't know where to draw the line but the fact that a kid can't bring a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to school because the school is worried about being liable for somebody with a peanut allergy coming into contact with peanut butter, to me, confirms that it's drawn WAY too far over to the "what people are liable for" side.

I'd like to think it's more along the lines of, "hey, here's a really simple/revenue neutral thing we can do to make our school safer for our children, and les CYA. But you're probably right.

It shouldn't be on the onus of every other parent to make sure they pack their kids lunch with items that do not contain products that OTHER parents' kids are allergic to.

I wonder what all you guys who are vehemently opposed to limited some foods think about the ADA. :|

I gave up before reading this whole thing, so forgive me if someone has said these things, but you all are mixing apples and oranges here.

The food allergy stuff is frightening. We have no idea what is going on with genetic engineering and processing of food.

My brother was allergic to corn in the 1960's. No way to ban that, its in virtually everything. He had to learn to manage. Lucky it wasn't as bad as the nut/shell fish allergies that seem to be around today.

The pussification of America is a real problem, but is not a part of the food thing. BB guns with eye protection, rear facing car seats, bicycle helmets, kids not being allowed to go outside and play unsupervised, etc., etc. are causing huge issues.

Vocal minorities impinging upon the rights of majorities (both right and left) for narrow agendas is a problem.

The generation (18-34) of today is the postpone generation, as large portions of it postpones commitment and assuming adult responsibilities because of being overly protected by parents, schools, social workers and other do-gooders. An unprecedented proportion of these folks can not step out into the unknown and take risks, but don't blame that on a kid who is deathly allergic to a food item and not old enough to manage it.
