I’m not saying they don’t exist. But the couple hundred who came and entered did so mostly peacefully. The hundreds of thousands who came and DIDN’T enter did so 100% peacefully. And again, most who entered were invited in, walked through in an orderly line between the ropes, and then exited.

It’s like your old tag line regarding Atlas Shrugged...not an instruction manual, but a warning.

I'm not going to make a ridiculous claim like 99% of a group...that's just hyperbole.
You break the law, you get punished. It's that simple and it amazes me that Republicans are trying to excuse criminal behavior.

Yes you do. It's the Night of the Broken Glass (for all the shattered glass from broken windows). Nazi leadership conducts a progrom of Jews. They signal an attack, and issues orders to party followers to ransack, vandalize, destroy and burn synagogues and Jewish businesses. German government officials watch as the SA and other Nazi's burn and destroy symbols of Jewish culture, Jewish businesses. They beat Jews as well.

Well, we've had the left calling for re-education camps for Trump supporters, and now have the left (NYT) basically calling for a Ministry of Truth..Ibanez wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 9:19 amWow. Can you imagine thinking some dude in a regional DNC group and a few twitter folks is somehow a broad call for "re-education camps."
What a terrifying world BDK must live in.

Re: Bargaining With Fascists?
And you have members of the left on the WA-PO, MSNBC, Katie Couric, etc calling for one step short of re-education camps with "deprogramming" for Trump supporters.

Re: Bargaining With Fascists?
Well yeah...running around with Trump flags for four years, defending nepotism and tens of thousands of lies, holding massive rallies for a God-like figure (even during a pandemic), storming the capitol, not listening to science, believing in conspiracies like QAnon and widespread voter fraud...it's creepy and cultish. Different political views are welcome but not when it becomes a threat to civil rights and democracy. Whether you believe it or not, we teetered on the edge of fascism the last four years and came close to falling off the edge. January 6th was a watershed moment.
That's what history will remember the Trump era for.
So yeah, 100% agree people need deprogramming (not with re-education camps, but with expanded mental health facilities, stronger educational and economic opportunities, and better societal safety nets). Mainstream and social media played a huge role giving these fringe ideas the ability to fester and grow, so there's a lot of blame there as well. Conservatives also need to take a hard, long look at their future.

Re: Bargaining With Fascists?
How would you describe a call to "cleanse" or detox the Trump movement?
Do you expect me to believe that Rick Klein, Political Director for ABC News in Washington DC is the only person with this thought?
I don't think that re-education camps are imminent but I do think there are quite a few people on the left who think that some sort of reeducation is necessary, justified and acceptable.

Im guessing positive psychological outcomes in overcoming brainwashing and cult membership are when it’s the afflicted’s idea. No one seriously is suggesting forced reprogramming. I’m rooting for a speedy recovery. That, unfortunately, will be delayed as long as Trump and his voters are still paid attention to. Who is going to save the Republican Party from it myself?

There are threats to civil rights and democracy from both sides.
We were nowhere close to teetering on the edge of fascism. January 6 was an anomaly and the people who participated should be ashamed and prosecuted for their crimes. But it did not occur in a vacuum. The people who participated in the rioting, looting and violence of the BLM/AnTiFa riots should have been ashamed and prosecuted. The watershed we're facing isn't simply because of the conservatives. Both sides have taken steps to tear down and destroy the republic. We need to address the underlying issues rather than demonizing conservatives and laying the blame solely at their feet!
I agree on the need to expand mental health facilities. That would be a tremendous boon to handling the homeless situation in Portland.
I also agree on the need for stronger educational opportunities but we need to teach people how to think not what to think. And I've said it a thousand times before but when the federal government sticks its nose into education they make it worse (NCLB, ESSA, etc.). Public education needs better funding but let the states handle the administration.
Economic opportunities were booming under Trump prior to the pandemic.
Conservatives and liberals both need to take a hard, long look at their future.

Can you imagine it being said by a sitting senator or congressperson? One who condones and supports thought reeducation?
