They really shouldn't be doing the "take down the Confederate monuments thing." It's like a movement where all of a sudden some people decided to start demanding that. They're just being assholes. Like what they did in New Orleans. There was no real reason for it.

It's particularly bad to insist on removing a memorial to Robert E. Lee in Virginia. The guy was simply put in position of having to decide between command of the Union Army offered to him by Lincoln or remaining loyal to his State. In those days the State was, I think, viewed as sovereign. He simply made a decision to remain loyal to those closest to him.

He was an outstanding military commander and the State of Virginia should be proud of him as a native son. He gave up a career he loved in the US military because of loyalty to Virginia. People who want a monument to him in a State he gave up his US Army career for taken down are vindictive pricks.

But Lee's commitment to the Army was superseded by his commitment to Virginia. After turning down an offer from President Abraham Lincoln to command the Union forces, Lee resigned from the military and returned home. While Lee had misgivings about centering a war on the slavery issue, when Virginia voted to secede from the nation on April 18, 1861, Lee agreed to help lead the Confederate forces.

It's not that it was the young lady's fault. It's that at least some of the counter demonstrators took actions that further inflamed the situation. Again: If counter protesters would've just stood around holding signs or something without seeking confrontation with the White Nationalists the White Nationalists would've done their little march, made a few speeches and that would've been it.

The guy that ran into people with his car was a White Nationalist. But, while we'll never know if he'd have done something like that if the situation hadn't been inflamed, the situation was inflamed. And no I'm not saying that the White Nationalists didn't contribute to that. But this thing where politicians are acting like the counter protesters didn't do something to contribute to the atmosphere of violence are not being intellectually honest.

Leaders should say, in no uncertain terms, that acting like the counter protesters acted when people with unpopular views hold rallies and such. Hold your own rally and express YOUR views. But don't try to violently suppress others who are trying to express views you find repugnant.

Something like "Look, the White Nationalists views are repugnant. But they have a right to assemble and express their views. You're just making the situation worse by getting violent and trying to suppress them. "

You know, I think it's kind of a self-fulfilling thing. If you're somebody who is successful with a nice career and all you're not going to be openly affliated with a White Nationalist group because it's going to compromise your position. You show up at a rally like that this weekend and you're going to lose your career.

So if you do have highly intelligent, successful people who share the views of the people in the picture you're not going to know it. They're not going to be out in the open running around with Confederate Battle Flags.

I don't know what happened with that guy. But I do know I saw plenty of videos with counter protesters confronting the White Nationalists, throwing things at them, in some cases throwing the first punch, etc.

Again: I think that if ALL of the counter protesters would've just protested without making any effort at confrontation there wouldn't have been any violence. Now, I know that there are a lot of things the White Nationalists did such that I can say if they hadn't done that there wouldn't have been any violence.

But what I'm getting at is the fact that media and leaders are acting like actions on the part of at least some counter protesters was not a factor. It was a factor.

Frankly the best thing to do would have been to not even have a counter protest. Just let the White Nationalists do their march on that day and whatever else they wanted to do. It would've had absolutely no effect on anything. That young lady would still be alive. So on and so forth.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said, in referring to the White Nationalists, "You came here today to hurt people."

I don't think that's true. I think if they'd have been left alone nobody would've been hurt. Yes, the White Nationalists clearly were prepared for trouble. But I think that's understandable. I think it was reasonable for them to anticipate that they would be confronted.

But they didn't go there "to hurt people." They went there to protest the removal of a statue and maybe make a statement. They were violently confronted and they violently responded.

Now, I'm sure they expected to be violently confronted and they bear some responsibility for doing what they did anyway. But it doesn't change the fact that the counter protesters were violent or excuse absolving the counter protesters of any responsibility for what happened.
