Support for almost any war (in the larger sense of the word) is generally weak. IMO there's nothing wrong with trying to preserve some of the support by not showing 100% of what goes on. If you're saying you want 100% honesty and fair reporting, you're nuts.
:suspicious:

During Vietnam, they showed a lot of our boys getting cut in half by bullets. Open woulds, legs blown off, the naked girl running down the street from napalm, the Vietnamese officer shooting the captured VC guy in the head, monks immolating themselves...all of those vicious pictures and videos depicted what was really going on (instead of what some folks wanted us to believe) and drove American opinion towards getting our boys out of that war.

Those pictures, and many like them, are what EVERY American should see, OVER and OVER, whenever some dippy whack job congressman, businessman, or President says that war is a necessary evil.

And, in the end, why did over 50,000 of our kids dies over there? :suspicious: Did we get what we wanted? Did we prevent the NVA from winning? Did we prevent any slaughter? Did we end up with Chinks digging tunnels to America? Did Thailand fall? Is Australia now part of the communist block? How about the Philippines?

That war was bvllshlt, and you know it. Most wars are not necessary evils...they are bvllshlt fights for power where the power brokers don't get hurt because they send the poor and uneducated to do the actual fighting.

Wars are pure profit for the decision makers...wars are a way to distract and/or inflame the masses.

Show the pictures of the reality of war...and then make sure the Senators and other leaders are sending themselves and their offspring into the conflict first.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We should never have to hide the realities of our actions from the public. Again, we're supposed to be better than that. It's one of the things that's supposed to set us apart.

I know you do.

Portraying the realities of war is real. Limiting those images and that reporting is propaganda.

Both are "real", but I don't disagree that limiting and choosing what to report is propaganda. Where we disagree is whether that should be done.

Sop you would have limited the realistic (and very often contradictory coverage as to what our administration was saying was happening) press coverage of Vietnam?

Why? :suspicious:

Both are real in the sense that the events depicted actually happened.

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but I don't think it's accurate to say what they're showing isn't "real". It just isn't all the footage they have.

I was also somewhat referring to staged stuff. I'm not for that. You know, the spandos stuff. :kisswink:

Are you OK with snipers taking out bad guys in the field? I'm not sure I'd want the kill footage on the evening news.

I'm not only picking Vietnam. We can start, and go, anywhere you want.

If you don't want to start with Vietnam, then choose a war where you don't think we should have honest, open media coverage, and then explain why.

But, I think we should cover EVERY war with honest, open coverage. If we are going to send people to die, let's be honest about what is happening.

So, fire it up...what war would you not cover openly and honestly...and why? :suspicious:

We'd have to find out what war you thought is/was for a good reason. My point being, you think Vietnam was a bogus war, so you're going to want the coverage to help expose that. To turn the tide. Maybe you think every war is bogus, so we're not going to agree on this one.

Yes. I've been saying that for a couple pages.
