The "Christian" right decided to align itself with the Republican party so that it could enforce it's will on others, something that I doubt Jesus would do. Now they are crying because there is pushback. :ohno:

kalmy and Chizzy, you don't really want to escalate this argument, do you?

I'm just making a legitimate observation
I don't care if churches don't pay taxes or whatever

but we need to stop pretending that Religion isn't business

:coffee:
If it's a business, it should pay taxes like a business and be subject to the same rules. I pay $21,000 a year in property taxes alone on the business, no children have been sexually molested, and many people find spiritual awakening there.

On a lighter note, non-descriminating hitching posts with a liquor and recreational weed license might be a growth industry.

While that may be the view of some, I doubt it is the view of a majority. The preservation of values, and the prevention of further degradation, is the most prominent reason, IMO.

I find it hard to believe the Christian Right is a live and let live group. They're just as bossy about their "values" as the "progressives" and they want the power to force their "values" on others.

Meh, I need some examples before I can agree or disagree.
I'm guessing that, for the most part, they are trying to prevent further degradation more than they are trying to raise the bar.

I'm assuming you're talking about Christian Values (correct..?)

Because the last time I checked They were as follows

1) Love God: "You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all your soul"
2) Fidelity in marriage: "Whom God has joined together let no man put asunder"
3) Renunciation of worldly goods: "Gather not riches up upon this earth, for there your heart will be also"
4) Renunciation of violence: "If a man strikes you on one cheek, turn the other cheek",
5) Forgiveness of sins: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us"
6) Unconditional love: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"

:coffee:

But I'm pretty sure you're confused about Christian Values and Legislation (as are most Christians)

I thought we were talking about the difference in "enforcing it's will" vs. "preservation of values and prevention of further degradation" as being the majority reason for Christians choosing the Republican Party.

Exactly...
So what part of the Republican Party defends those Christian Values I listed above ..?
Please explain where those come into play with the Republican Party exactly..?

86 said, "The "Christian" right decided to align itself with the Republican party so that it could enforce it's will on others..."

I felt that he was generalizing a larger group because of what he perceived from a smaller group. I believe that most of the Christian right just want to preserve the things that are current (having given up a lot of ground over the years), rather than "enforcing their will" (which I take as reversing things). But society is degrading on all fronts, and they are not only not holding their footing, but they are losing ground.

The point is that they know they are losing ground and can't do anything to reverse it. Their only hope is to prevent further losses, or more likely, slow it down.

Now I'm not sure what you were saying as it related to anything I said, or meant to say.

I think it is hard to argue that, for the Christian right, society is not degrading on all fronts. Just look at how much looser TV and radio has gotten over the years. So many entertainers and athletes have proven to be poor role models over and over again, because that is what the industry says will maintain their popularity.
Their (Christian right) way of life is being challenged on so many levels that they are losing ground and they know it. In this discussion, it does not matter whether you agree with their views or not. It's just simply understanding what their view is and relating it to societal changes. I don't see how, overall, things have gotten better for them.

ISIS wants to "force their values" on others. The Christian Right just thinks you're stupid if you don't believe as they do.

Now, if you want to change the discussion, that's fine. What about the values?
