When a FORBES magazine says it doesn't matter
And the editor in Chief is Steve Forbes Conservative Political figure himself

The point is
1) Hiring is a LAST RESORT in any business (period)
2) If the difference between $8 and $12 dollars matters - you're NOT REALLY in a position to HIRE
3) McDonalds already proves it doesn't matter for large models
4) Smaller models if they can't afford to pay it = they're already in trouble and just don;t know it

I understand
number 1 is a certainty.
Number isn't a blanket statement you can make across the board, sorry
Number three, as I said Macdonald's isn't really a large model. Certainly the corporation is but the individual franchise is not. However, what Macdonald's is, is the one of the most profitable business in that model. so yes, it can afford it better. Now raising the minimum wage might actually force Burger King, etc to become as good as MacDonalds in other areas, but that really isn't the point
4. I think a lot of smaller models know they are in trouble. So shit let's just pass a law and tell them to close ;)

I get lost in the other arguments, but I will still stick to my main argument (while I am not really opposed to an increase), the benefits that everyone is touting for raising the minimum wage really doesn't accomplish what people say it does for the reasons I mentioned above. It is an argument that politicians make because it is an easy one to articulate, not because it actually brings that much benefit.
I pretty much agree ^ in a few different was...
Yes raising minimum wage doesn't really create much benefit
Nor does it foretell the end of times and bring on the apocalypse as we're led to believe

So having no minimum wage and having it at $25 an hour would basically not be any different?

The other problem with the minimum wage is a little bit like the problem with tax rates. Live in South Carolina, make $100,000 dollars a year and pay 28% fed taxes you are doing pretty well. Live in New York city, you probably aren't hurting but it isn't quite as easy. Same with minimum wage, work in Seattle where the cost of living is higher and I would imagine there are very few people that make $7/hr. Livein Pumpkintown SC where the average trailer rents for $200 month, well ;)

Good point, but Chizzy is ready to accept that in "fly-over" regions like Eastern Washington and Western South Carolina. :ohno:

That being said, another benefit of an increase is that it might give an advantage to companies who are already paying above minimum wage. E.G., Costco might be more competitive with Walmart.

Not to get off on tangents, but Costco already knocks the socks off Sams Club. Their sales per store are way higher than Sam's Club. Wish I knew retail better if so I might know why (other than obviously customer service)

I do business with Costco and Sams Club
The average Costco Member makes in excess of $70k a year (the average)
Sams Club - not even in the same ballpark of clients

I sat in a meeting with Costco where they broke down the demographic of metro-Seattle entirely
and showed me exactly how many households in King County made over $250k a year
then they dropped the bomb... over 80% those households are Costco members

It was a big number... and they pretty much had them all

I would expect a similar conclusion with Wal-Mart and Target.

Wal-Mart & Target don't charge $90 to walk in the door

That would do it. :thumb: I knew their customers were better off, had no idea it was that much. Not sure it is the case any more but at one time sales per store at Costco were somewhere around 4 to 5 times per store at Sam's club.
