What the hell is wrong with everyone here?
Obama, while I am not a fan BTW, never mentioned a ban on guns. He never mentioned a change in any laws related to guns. All he said was that he will do everyting in his power to push laws that will allow us, as a nation, to do a better job for our children.
This could mean a lot of things. Yes, it could mean a change in the gun laws. But that is not what he said.

If you take away guns, then another weapon will be used. What needs to be done is to provide help to the mentally ill. But first we need to identify them. Maybe a first step is to have every person be "analyzed" prior to high school graduation. "At risk" kids can be identified and notification, along with suggestions for help, can be provided to the parents. At least this is an attempt to deal with the root cause. The last opportunity that we have as a society to capture a large percentage of the masses would be as a condition of HS graduation. After that, only driver's license renewals will provide opportunities, but that won't happen. Not sure if this will make a difference or not but if we want to "do better" (Obama's words), identifying and helping the mentally ill is a key priority.

Again, my point, which was lost on the progun lobby around here, is that we have proven time and time again as a society that we are not responsible enough to have free access to deadly weapons.

We cannot identify, treat or control our mentally ill and unstable.

Until we can do so, we should do everything we can to limit access to firearms. If that means that some guy in Montana can't own a Bushmaster .223 then so be it.

That said, I come across a lot of people who think that they might need to eventually protect themselves against the government. Will the US government turn against its citizens one day? What else should we introduce, condoms for kids sounds good, make sure 6 and 7 year olds know about that. How about we all give them their own needles too so they don't have to share them if they want to shoot up with drugs. Teach them about the dangers of drinking and driving by having hard liquor as an option at lunch, right along with milk & apple juice.
