"Schools safer today than in 1990s, study on shootings says

Despite the horror of the high school massacre in Florida, U.S. schools overall are safer today than they were in the early 1990s, and there is not an epidemic of such shootings, a new academic study is reporting.

Researchers at Northeastern University say mass school shootings are extremely rare, that shootings involving students have been declining since the 1990s, and four times as many children were killed in schools in the early 1990s than today.

“There is not an epidemic of school shootings,” said James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law and Public Policy at Northeastern. He said more children die each year from pool drownings or bicycle accidents......."

I give it 2 years before police arrive at a school shooting, get confused and shoot a teacher holding a weapon. :coffee:

BDK- here's another company for you to avoid.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/busi ... ifles.html
One of the nation’s largest sports retailers, Dick’s Sporting Goods, said Wednesday morning it was immediately ending sales of all assault-style rifles in its stores.

The retailer also said that it would no longer sell high-capacity magazines and that it would not sell any gun to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws.

The NRA discount applied when travelling to an NRA convention. So...I still don't understand how BDK can be upset. He and the others seem triggered...like liberal snowflakes.

Nice - Georgia is going to royally screw themselves and 33,000 families. :ohno: :ohno:

Talk about knee-jerk reactions. Why can't Republicans accept that a business can and should do what it wants?

Oh yea...that's right- they are hypocrites.
I don’t think private businesses should be getting this type of corporate welfare from a state...but for Georgia to withhold it because of this action is just plain wrong...

What’s next...forcing a baker to bake a cake for something they disagree with???

1) Training only gets you so far. How one acts during the actual event is different.
2) How many times do we see police shoot someone?
3) I've led and instructed LE through various hostage/barricade scenarios at FLETC in Glynco, GA to know that even the best make mistakes. https://www.dhs.gov/science-and-technology/saver

We did a few others but this was the first one I was apart of.

There should be plenty of changes regarding guns, however, arming teachers should be way down the list, if even on the list at all. I can see just as much if not more bad that comes of that idea than good.

I didn't say that. But that doesn't take away from the fact that teachers will be armed, LE will enter a building and can accidentally shoot a teacher that is armed and freaking out.

A teacher that is freaking out should not be armed in the first place.

Goddamnit Gil. :ohno: Teachers, even with their 1 or 2 Saturday training class, don't know how they'll act in the event of a school shooter. I would hope that any teacher that wants to be armed is ready for it. But you don't know. We see police, veteran police, break down. Make mistakes. It's folly to think that won't happen with an AP Chemistry teacher who has had a 1 day instruction on fire arm safety. :twocents:

I'm thinking of my friend, ex-military, been in battle, that teaches. He would be a perfect choice to carry. Police should also have a list with pictures, of everyone in the school that can carry. I wouldn't think a chemistry teacher with 1 day instruction would be a very good choice. Needs to be a quality selection process and training for schools.

I can see it being lower priority. Maybe even having just a couple teachers act in the same capacity as a Sky Marshall, if it comes to that.

ITS STILL A BETTER OPTION THAN NOT HAVING GUN IN SCHOOLS.

Even the PR of saying that some teachers are carrying will stop this 99% of the time. These shooters are cowards

This. If even 1 or 2 faculty are thought to be carrying, the nerdy loser fucks won't come near the place. This last fella Cruz couldn't even muster up enough guts to off himself when he was done. :ohno:

Teacher in custody after barricading self in classroom with gun

A teacher is in custody after police say he barricaded himself inside a classroom at a high school in northwest Georgia Wednesday, police say.

Police responded to the report of shot or shots fired at Dalton High School in Dalton and reported via Twitter that a person, believed to be a teacher, was barricaded inside. A Dalton police spokesperson tells CBS News the teacher had a gun.

CBS affiliate WDEF reports the situation began around 11:30 a.m. when the teacher blocked students from entering his class. When the principal tried to unlock the door, they heard a gunshot inside and the school was evacuated.

No other shots were fired during the incident, the station reports. Police later tweeted that the teacher was in custody.

No children were in danger, Dalton Police said. One student apparently sustained an ankle injury while running inside the school during the evacuation, police say.

Police say they don't have information to release about the teacher's identify or what caused the incident.

Sounds like he left messages prior to this, saying he may hurt himself or others. Ignored as a joke by everyone. This is a teacher that should not be armed and if they leave threatening messages, should not be allowed in school.
