The sensible response to major ideological differences is to split a nation, not pursue bloodshed. It would be a major moment in modern history, but splitting nations is far from unprecedented and there's no reason the United States couldn't go on that that path.

We can still work together as a powerful North American federation with a common currency and close military alliances. The only difference would be our different federal governments.
The sensible response for you and others wanting to make us Venezuela is for you to move there and leave this republic alone

That may be true of most constitutions, in countries where anarchy and war are commonplace, but OUR founding fathers actually hit a home run and got it right. We live in the richest, most powerful country on earth, the envy of every other country (that’s why they flock here), with the richest poor, the richest rich, etc. etc. Are we prefect? No...is the document perfect? No...But to view that document as a mere tool is to do it (and America) a huge disservice.

I mean, I honestly don't think we are the envy of every other country. There are a lot of countries with a higher happiness index than here.

and remind you that I've been involved in the confirmation process for asst secretaries in the Rayburn - hearings that attract heavy interest are not just "walk in"

You can't just show up - seating is limited. Those people got in because they got passes
Maybe the one you were involved in was a closed door hearing? Some national security confirmations have a closed door aspect as well. The rest are open to the public. :thumb:

Including this one.

There are 48 seats reserved for the public. There is a line waiting to get in. You do get a ticket - but, it's not given only by Senators on the committee. It's first-come-first-serve based on the line outside the building. And they rotate the public in 20 minute intervals.

You can't just show up and expect to get in... but, if you get there early enough or are patient enough... you can get in.
After an explosive start to Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing Tuesday, Day Two began with an easy-to-miss, but notable change: The number of seats for the public were reduced by half, from 48 to 24. The committee restored the full 48 seats six hours later, following press inquiries. It is not clear what brought on the change.

The chair vacillation came after a combative first day Tuesday, when 61 protesters using those seats interrupted the hearing and were removed by Capitol Police. On Wednesday morning, the Senate Judiciary Committee reassigned two rows of seats designated for the public to “Senate staff.” After the change, many of the seats remained empty throughout the day.
Protests erupted scattershot throughout the hearing, with the exception of one 45-minute period of silence in the morning, when police stopped allowing any member of the public inside.
Foy indicated the freeze on public attendance may have been a delay due to other logistical concerns.

Members of the public have been allowed to watch the hearing in 20-minute intervals, with police escorting rotating groups in and out of the room.

Oh. Sorry. Forgot PBS is Fake News.

Is the Senate Judiciary Committee credible?
Due to limited space in the hearing room, admittance to the hearings is only for a limited period of time in order to allow more members of the public access to the hearings.

Hearing attendees must obtain hearing passes, which will be distributed on a first come, first served basis at the hearing admission staging area on the days of the hearing. Passes do not guarantee admission into the hearing and are only valid for the day in which the pass is issued.

On Tuesday, September 4, 2018, and continuing through the conclusion of the hearing, the line for admission into the hearing will start at the NW Corner of First Street and C Street NE. Individuals who have received a pass will be ushered into the hearing room by Judiciary Committee staff at intervals throughout the day.

No picketing or demonstrating will be allowed by individuals standing in line or in the hearing. At any time authorized staff or U.S. Capitol Police can request the removal of any person from the line or the hearing for failure to adhere to established rules or other security/safety related reasons.

Once persons holding passes have been cleared by security, they must remain with the group at all times. Failure to follow this guideline will result in individuals not being admitted into the hearing room.

Persons who received a pass and were not admitted to the hearing on the day in which the pass was issued will not receive special accommodations for the next day of hearings. Individuals wishing to wait in line for the following day’s hearing may do so ONLY after the current day’s hearing has concluded.

No, they weren’t closed door.

I stand corrected. They have changed the rules on these hearings, and it is a relatively recent change. You used to have to go through your rep or Senator’s office for them, the same as for floor sessions and other tours as well, like the WH.

I don’t like suggesting to people that they move.

I prefer to tell people to “pick a better country”.

I’ve been to many of the happy places on that list - and I was never happier in any of them than I am in those parts of America where they don’t try to take your kids for letting them walk around the block on their own

Yup, he'll be in before October. Republicans have the votes in the Senate, so he gets confirmed. Just like the Republicans always had the votes to say no to Garland and why he would never be confirmed. It's a simple process, just gets theatrical with the hearings that mean nothing anymore.
