In the heat of the moment I can see someone thinking their teaser was in their hand rather than the pistol. The officers immediate statement seems to back that up.

But it is true that regardless of training, reserve officers are less experienced, and in many states their authority is limited. In SC, they have to be with a regularly certified officer at all times. I was a reserve for 5 months before starting full time back in 1991.

Incidents like this will likely do away with reserve programs where the reserves are not fully trained up to the standard of the regular officers.

Dorchester County makes you go through the same training as police, same hours of training however you don't get paid.

Actually, nobody in SC really gives the same training. Reserves can't go through the SCCJA because seats are limited and they need them all for the regular recruits. Plus, departments pay for their trainees and budgets (especially Sheriff's office budgets) won't support it.

DCSO, like all departments with reserves, holds their own training "academy" and then the test is administered at the SCCJA- but I would find it hard to believe they have changed things to match up with the academy, because that is 8 weeks long, 5 days a week all day. To match that for someone who is working a regular job full time it would take a year or more to complete.

Reserve police accreditation standards are set by SLED/SCCJA which makes it the same for everybody, and the no pay thing is also a rule.

You do an 8-12 week course. It's not the SCCJA, but it's still a LE academy administered by an LE agency. I looked into doing it a while back.

Actually, if you could read, you would see that the Sheriff's Office said nothing wrong happened. It was the County Attorney that filed the charges AFTER the publicity. The Sherriff wasn't going to do anything to his buddy.

The one in SC wasn't funny at all because it was just a subpar cop being a dickbag.

But this one is hilarious. It somehow reminds of the scene late in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre where Leatherface and family wake up their old half dead grandfather so he can take a few hammer whacks at the head of the pretty girl they captured, but he can't get a good grip on the hammer and just keeps dropping it.

The Sheriff turned the investigation over to the Tulsa POLICE Department (as is common practice).

Tulsa POLICE Sgt. Jim Clark oversaw the investigation and found no cause to charge Reserve Deputy Bates.

The District Attorney reviewed the investigation and chose to charge Bates, as is commonly done by District Attorney's every day...even when the cases are not "newsworthy".

The white Sheriff played no roll in the investigation or decision.
