People that prefer to live in urban areas or who live in urban areas for any reason other than they have no other choice are sick.

IMO, the two main reasons people would prefer large cities are more dining options and "culture". You are like me in that you aren't impressed with upscale or exotic food and think diversity is overrated, so it's no surprise that we prefer smaller towns.

If night life and obscure food and ballets aren't your thing there is no way you could stand the big city.

You know there is a middle ground between "rural" and "big city", right?

I wouldn't want to live in either a big city or Bumfuck, GA... but a mid-sized city is perfect middle ground, imo.

Something like Savannah, GA... Greenville, SC... Asheville, NC... for some SECoast bias examples.

I do think the "diversity" thing is a total crock but that's a different issue. When it comes to my being mystified why anyone would want to actually live IN a big city it's not a race thing. I have to go to big cities for conferences fairly often. And I just don't get it. I don't get how anyone would want to live in that kind of environment. Visit it from time to time? Maybe. But LIVE in it? You've got to be kidding me.

Like when I went to Seattle what I saw was an overwhelmingly White population. Same when I went to Portland. But no WAY would I want to actually live IN either one of those cities. I live in a suburban area that has a WHOLE lot higher percentage of Blacks than Seattle or Portland do and I'd MUCH rather live where I live than in a city like either of those. Heck, my NEIGHBORHOOD has a much higher percentage of Blacks than Seattle or Oregon do.

And no in this case I'm not dissing the Northwest as a Region either. I sure as heck wouldn't want to live in New Orleans or Atlanta.

Culture? I mean c'mon. To me people who say they want that "culture" crap when they're talking about stuff like going to watch ballet in person are just trying to convince other people that they're sophisticated.

I'd rather be exposed to different ways of thinking, different interests, etc. etc.

We'll, if my choices were Berkley, Harlem, or small town, Conkville, USA, I'm choosing Conkville.
