Fork truck drivers are a dime a dozen at any shipping warehouse
quality wait staff:
A) Work harder B) Need to know more C) Need to care more
All of which (A thru C) "cost" more in the real world
oh and since when does anybody actually care about anything in that specific article...
Americas lowest level of employment debating on how much they would tip a waiter

I spent most of January in New Zealand where the min wage is $13/hr, equal to about $11/hr US. I never saw a cafe/coffee shop/restaurant/bar that wasn't spotless, and staffed by friendly and capable employees. No tipping. Are things more expensive? A big breakfast cost $16-$18NZ, about $13-$15US. Pretty close to what you'll pay here after the tip.

Where in Europe do you tip?BDKJMU wrote:Fed min wage for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour. PA is $2.83 (with tips still must meet fed min wage of $7.25). check the 2012 calculator for U.S. avg. vs. Seattle
it's right there in print
Food Preparation and Serving Related $10.51
Building and Grounds Cleaning and maintenance $12.68
Etc.
I did a little checking...every site is different, but those figures seem to be in line with most AVERAGE wages/salaries on those fields.
That is quite a difference from a MINIMUM STARTING wage.
You don't have to be a genius to see the difference between starting everyone at $15/hour versus having the average pay being $10.51/hour.
Hell, you don't have to be a genius to see the difference between the AVERAGE STARTING pay being $10.51 in Food Prep industry versus making every company pay $15 for starting pay.
In the end, you are simply being a jackass (wait, your posts are jackassish) who won't admit that raising the minimum wage will eventually result in spiraling costs across the board.
Oh, BTW, don't tell your Seattle nurses they are getting paid well. Lots of complaints about the comparatively low pay for nurses in Seattle - along with the complaints about how much it costs to live in the area.

Re: Seattle harmony - crumbling as we speak
Whether it's related or not I remember having a discussion with a guy who moved from Mississippi to Seattle. He was telling me how great it was and I explained that I would never consider living there because the cost of living is too high.
Like right now, by one on line cost of living calculator, you would need an income of $128,000 per year in Seattle to maintain the same standard of living as you could on $100,000 per year in Baton Rouge.
Don't know if their weaselly progressive mentality is a factor in that. But I wouldn't be surprised.

Look at things like poverty and education statistics. My neighbor was transferred to Alabama and was freaked out by the third world nature and degree of suckiness in the schools.

Ha ha....

I lived on both coasts up and down and a few places in between (even the flyover)

You're a riot. So, a city with a higher cost of living suffers from a "weaselly progressive mentality?" You must not have been in certain parts of Europe lately. Go back a decade or more and there wasn't much tipping. No, they won't tell you tipping is unnecessary, at least in Germany. I was in Germany just last week, and at least in the big cities that get lots of tourists, 5-10% is normal now. My GF is German, lives in the states but travels to Germany or Switzerland nearly every week (flight attendant) and tells me 5-10% is now standard. Heck, don't take my word for it. 1st 5 websites I looked at:Ibanez wrote:Where in Europe do you tip?BDKJMU wrote:Fed min wage for tipped employees is $2.13 per hour. Re: Seattle harmony - crumbling as we speak
I used Baton Rouge because that's the way the calculator works. You have to pick a city. I live in the suburbs and both of my kids scored in the upper 90 percentiles in their standardized tests. That means they did better than the overwhelming majority of students in Seattle or anywhere else did.
And meanwhile my cost of living was much lower than it would have been in Seattle.
As an aside, you need to understand that school systems are rated by standardized test scores and the demographics of the area have a huge impact on standardized test scores. If you adjust Louisiana standardized test scores for demographics Louisiana looks OK.
Of course you're not allowed to do that officially. Then you'd have to admit that race is a factor and the fact that Louisiana is over 30% Black impacts its standardized test scores.
