I live near the coast where the only "hills" are the bridges. My 2008 Hybrid saves me money. On long trips, I can get 50+mpg with a 10 gallon tank. Btw, note that I'm not the one being superior about my car. I mentioned the car I drive b/c of the posts before me. Driving my 19mpg Mustang, 50+ miles a day was costing too much money. I had to fill up almost 3 times a week. Since I bought the hybrid, I fill up every 1.5 weeks (on average).

At lot of hybrid and NON hybrid owners are smug about their vehicles. "My car gets 350 hp", " i've got dual exhaust, a rear spoiler and a sweet system" , " my truck can haul 4 Rosie O'Donnells." :twocents:

Good one.

It's true, people are smug about their gas guzzling car, energy efficient car, their dog, cat, job, phone, plastic surgeon, brother's connection with the owner of the Lakers, etc....

Whatcher talking about here, Mark, kinda reminds of when PetroConks pull out the specious fossil fuel shit such as "how did you get to work today" or "Did Gore fly in a jet to the climate change meeting?", etc, etc.

How childish. The only thing many of us can do is what we ARE doing - that is, buying Hybrids and conserving said fossil fuels, however we can.

I got out of my gas hog truck almost completely and drive my 38 mpg Fiesta damned near everywhere.
Am I flying in a fossil fuel-consuming jet aircraft on my business trip? Yeah, but the motherfucker is shoulder-to-shoulder packed - the airline is saving that fossil fuel...and making money, btw. Time was 15-16 years ago, I'm sure many of us remember, we'd be in a 757, as I was from Chicago to Los Angeles, and there were 19 people on board!!! On a 757!!!!! What a waste.

We do what we can, how we can.

I'm not against solar power per se anyway. It's just that the technology is not developed to the point where it can make a truly meaningful contribution to our power needs. And I couldn't care less if it fries birds. Big deal.

I have no objection to trying to develop and improve it and if it fries birds so be it.

The thing with a hybrid is that you have to look at how much it costs you vs. a comparable model to start with then see if the improved gas mileage savings is going to be sufficient to cover the increases cost of the car over its lifetime. But I guess you may get some kind of tax benefit. Don't know.

I can't consider hybrids until they have pickup truck hybrids anyway. In 1998 I bought my first pickup truck and after experiencing that I will never be without a pickup truck again.

No, I'm not Jon.

I do my research; profusely study political agenda; will invest days and weeks studying research; have the education to discern appropriate scientific value; understand human behavior (hysteria); and have repeatedly cited research to back up my conclusions.

The problem with solar power plants is that the air around them is so clean there is nothing to stop the heat they generate from radiating into the atmosphere. They need to run some gas powered engines along side of the solar plant so that the exhaust from the engines can trap the heat close to the ground.

Another solution would be to operate the solar plant at night, especially on really hot days.

They have hybrid pick up trucks and have for years. :coffee:

I drive approx 425-500 miles on approx. $33. I average about $100 in gas a month. You idle in traffic, I don't. I don't waste gasoline sitting at a stop sign or red light. People who bitch about hybrids have no idea about how they work and are too stuck in their ways to change or try something new.

Update.

Workers at a state-of-the-art solar plant in the Mojave Desert have a name for birds that fly through the concentrated beams of solar energy focused upward by the plant's 300,000 mirrors — "streamers," for the smoke plume that comes from birds that ignite in midair.

Federal wildlife investigators who visited BrightSource Energy's Ivanpah plant last year and watched as birds burned and fell, reporting an average of one "streamer" every two minutes, are urging California officials to halt the operator's application to build a still-bigger version.

The investigators want the halt until the full extent of the deaths can be assessed. Estimates per year now range from a low of about a thousand by BrightSource to 28,000 by an expert for the Center for Biological Diversity environmental group.
