It has next to nothing to do with safety and everything to do with control.

I can see exploiting a safety first mentality to gain control. But I think the problem is that the People do have that "safety first" attitude. Seriously. Like how many times have you seen people respond to what goes on at airports now by saying "as long as they keep us safe?" I really do think there is a a majority of the population who can be convinced to go along with just about anything if they can be convinced that it lowers risk a little.

The People are being conditioned by the constant fear-mongering of the govt. I agree with STD1990, I'd rather be less safe than where we're headed. Jesus, people, you have a better chance of being hit by lightning.
