Listen, I'm not defending anyone but to call someone an asshole because they hold a belief contrary to yours makes you an asshole. Respect the right to disagree. Funny, we don't see you guys bitching about the homophobic southern baptists.

He's a Jesuit as well. First Jesuit Pope ever.

Obviously the Jesuits have a checkered history through the past several hundred years, but then again, what part of the Church or even Western/European civllization doesn't? I was married in a Jesuit church in Philly - the wife had been going there and adopted it as her parish. Really enjoyed it - very open and welcoming atmosphere, actually plenty of gays in attendance as it was a stated mission for the parish to welcome any and all regardless of the greater Church stance on anything. It's that kind of openess that would be a real change for the overall Church to adopt.

No, it's actually one of the reasons why this guy was not considered one of the top contenders this time - the thought was that they were going to go with one of the younger possibilities. Being 76 (he turns 77 still this year) means there's likely to be another change of Pope in the next handful of years. Maybe he'll be the type who cleans house for the next, much younger Pope?

It would be hard to vote against a Blue Hen for the highest office in the land. I bet he'd keep coming to home games, too - he's been a real fan, not like Biden who stops in and sits in the Presidents Box at mid field. Christie has still kept his seats (yes, he may spill over to more than one seat) on the 20 or so.

Certainly a good thing if the Curia doesn't care for him - reform there is long overdue. Maybe that's why they went with an older Pope - he's a short term guy that can come in and clean house and have it ready for a younger Pope in a couple of years. Kinda like a hatchet man in a business who comes in and does the firing and then leaves. Time will tell, but it already looks like a better choice than Benedict was when he was picked.
