Unions served a purpose in protecting workers from unsafe working conditions, sub-standard pay, etc. But intelligent employers now realize that safety effects the bottom line and that having well-trained and thus better paid employees can be a competitive advantage. If unions want to play a role in the future of this country than they need to stop protecting yesterday's jobs and yesterday's benefits (which are unsustainable in today's economic environment) and start working with employers to find ways to help companies compete globally.
With that said, I don't have a problem with a union leader making a significant salary. They are executives running an organization and they should be compensated for their efforts. I do have issues when they are start playing games with their employment history in order to juice their pensions. It's a big problem in Illinois where retired union leaders and others are collecting both union and city/state pensions based on their most recent union salary even though they made a fraction of that while working for the city/state 20+ years ago.
