I think the GOP is too divided right now. Candidates like Romney might not appeal to the "base", candidates like Perry might not appeal to the more moderate voters.

The GOP need a candidate that appeals to independants. I'd like to see Paul win, but I think Romney is the GOP's best shot.

New CNN Poll: 65% give Obama thumbs down on economy
CNN Political Unit ^ | SEPTEMBER 1, 2011 | CNN Political Unit
Washington (CNN) - Only a third of all Americans approve of how President Barack Obama is handling the economy, according to a new national survey.
And with a CNN/ORC International Poll also indicating that more than three-quarters of the public say the country is in bad shape right now, there's little wonder why the president is getting such low marks.
According to the poll, released Wednesday morning, 28 percent of people questioned say things are going well in the country today.
"That may be a slight uptick from early August but it still represents a double-digit drop from earlier this year," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "And it's clear that economic jitters are a drag on President Obama's standing with the voting public."
Thirty-three percent give him a thumbs up on the budget deficit and 37 percent approving of how he's dealing with unemployment.

The problem - to be honest is the trench warfare mentality of the two parties. In the last decade, our bases have come to think of this the same way the operatives do. We start looking at the next race during GOTV of the current race. The campaign never ends for us - and that mentality has, through the rise particularly in internet organizing and activism filtered down in to our respective bases. I don't really know if you can point the finger to one party or another in that regard - although the GOP's behavior post 9/11 and in the run up to the Iraq war - timing war votes for electoral benefit above all else - was certainly a seminal moment - so too were the mid-decade re-districtings in Georgia and Texas.BlueHen86 wrote:I've always felt that the country ran better when both parties had some power, now I think we're screwed. With the parties, and now their bases, zeroed in on elections - almost like sporting events - the process of governing almost seems to have become secondary to winning and losing elections - in essence things have turned on their head.
Currently, the Repubs have no motivation to compromise - the less that gets done, the more they presume the public will blame Obama - to their benefit come next November. Certainly, the Dems did this as well to Bush when they could - no question.
As for one-party rule - as both parties have shown us in the past decade - one party rule tends to just be a series of in-fights and base-brawls. The bases get fired up - now they have total control - they want a revolution - the members are too worried about getting re-elected generally to give them what they want, the natives get restless - and you have an inter-party pie fight instead of governance...
I'm not sure what the solution really is - but that's how I see it.
