Cruz does have a problem with his persona. He does come off as creepy. But he has a way better understanding of how to approach governance than Donald Trump does. And he actually knows and respects the Constitution. Trump does not.

And, look, it didn't have to be Cruz. Republican primary voters had a number of choices. And they ended up picking the absolute worst that they could've picked.

We have nothing on how Trump would govern, but let's be serious, all Cruz did was block and argue everything in Congress. Which is fine if he had fruitful debates with the opposition before making those decisions. But no, he can't even do that.

The things you're talking about reflect understanding how government works. Trump does not know how government works. That is illustrated by things like him saying he'd nominate a Supreme Court Justice who would go after Hillary Clinton. He has no clue.

You may not like what Cruz did. But he understands how government works.

He understands how government works (we are a government built to be purposefully inefficient), but it still doesn't mean we can't have vigorous debates. Cruz didn't even listen to fellow Congressmen...he was hated by like everyone. In a way, this lack of knowing how to debate showed in the primaries vs. Trump. What happened during the debates illustrates why I almost never watch those "debates." They're not debates. At least they're not debates in the sense of actually arguing about substance. What happened during those "debates" is that Trump hurled insults. He had nothing real. Nothing of substance. He just did stuff like tell Jeb Bush "if you get any lower in the polls you'll be off the stage."

And Republican primary voters responded positively to that kind of vacant approach. That is not a real positive indication with respect to Republican primary voters.

If you're talking about actual debate on substance Donald Trump is no match for Ted Cruz. No match for just about anybody else in the initial Republican field for that matter. But we weren't talking about debate on substance.

Let me go back to a Bill Clinton mantra:

It's the economy stupid.

Trump is going to use a Clintonism to beat a Clinton.

Trade is going to be Trump's bread and butter issue. American working people are ANGRY about the results of Clinton's signature NAFTA and other trade policies that sent their jobs to Mexico and China.

Hillary has NO answer for that. Hell, she's now doing damage control in W VA with her past remarks about coal.

IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID

I'm not voting for Trump if I want a robust economy unless he comes out with some plausible plans for how he'll improve things rather than just saying what people want to hear regardless of whether it contradicts something he has already said.

Steven Chapman has a nice opinion piece in the Chicago Tribune pointing out a few of Trump's contradictions ...

The stark, simple fact is that his budget proposals would do just the opposite — with a vengeance. It is impossible to simultaneously reduce revenue, increase spending, widen the budget deficit and pay down the debt. Any Wharton School graduate knows as much.

But Trump also knows what a lot of Americans want to hear, on foreign affairs as well as domestic ones. What they don't want to hear is that making sensible government policies means choosing among painful trade-offs.

These voters want everything they now get in the way of federal benefits while paying less in taxes. They want the United States to dominate the world and get its way without fail, but they shun any personal sacrifices to achieve those ambitious goals.

Trump is not one to disabuse them of these pleasant assumptions. If they insist on believing they can have it all, he'll promise to give it to them.

If he ends up in the White House, they'll be terribly disappointed to learn it was too good to be true. Until then, they'll enjoy the fantasy.
