Thanks, Obama!Over the past five years, Amazon created over 150,000 jobs in the United States, growing its workforce here from 30,000 employees in 2011 to over 180,000 at the end of 2016.

Amazon is killing retail though.
Not that I care. I'm a Prime member and probably made between 50 and 100 purchases last year. The mail lady hates me because she has to drive all the way down my rural lane so frequently. There's another lady that does the Sunday deliveries and she hates me too.

No doubt about it.
In reality, manufacturing, industrial, etc. jobs simply aren't coming back. Retail still employs a ton of people... but, for how much longer? The economy has changed and people (and regions) are getting left behind.
Trump has negotiated some jobs to stay or to remain. That's certainly not a bad thing. But, it can only amount to a drop in the bucket.

Wharehousing, shipping, and packaging jobs should be on the rise with Amazon's success...until automation takes those over too. Then it will all just be robot repair. By that time we'll be working for the machines.Skjellyfetti wrote:No doubt about it.

Yeah, Amazon is putting almost all of their R&D into robotics and automation.

Re: The Official "Making America Great Again" Thread
My one and only private sector (FUCK THAT SHIT!) job was as a production supervisor with Cintas uniforms. I worked in one of their first "autosort" plants just outside of Philly, and the automation was really freaking cool. Every garment had a barcode inside the neckband/waistband. When stuff came out of the dryers loose, it was thrown in a bin and rolled out to our hanger ladies. They would scan the code, which would put the information in an RFID chip that collared the clothes hanger. Then the hanger would throw the garment on an automated track and it would get routed either through a steam tunnel or to a pressing station if the customer paid for pressing. If a repair was needed (usually a missing button), the hanger would code that and the garment would switch off the rail at the repair station. Ultimately, the garments would automatically line up, by truck, in stop order at the end of the line and our loaders would just pull that truck in and roll the stuff on.

Side note about Cintas, and it ties in perfectly with this thread. The worst account was...
...drumroll...
Trump Casinos, Atlantic City.
We did all their kitchen garments. They set the dirty stuff OUTSIDE in bins in July for a few days before it came back. The smell and the maggots were just awesome. I really felt bad for the driver and unloaders.

And, those RFID chips are how Amazon is going to track items in their Amazon Go stores.
No cashiers. No checkout line. No scanning your shit yourself even. Just walk in, grab your shit, and walk out. It knows what is in your basket and deducts it from your account.
