Consumer Reports has a serious problem with those falcon-wing doors.
The group, which once said a Tesla car was so good it broke their ratings system, has ranked Tesla 25th out of 29 auto brands in its 2016 Annual Auto Reliability Survey.
Tesla's new Model X crossover — and its signature falcon-wing doors — weighed heavily on the decision.
"The Model X launched with abundant problems, including frequent malfunctions of the falcon-wing doors, water leaks, and infotainment and climate-control system problems," noted a release from Consumer Reports."
In a comment to CNBC, Consumer Reports' Director of Automotive Testing Jake Fisher said, "The Model X out of the gate is very problematic. A lot of the problems have to do with the complex doors. The falcon-wing doors are kind of an accident waiting to happen."
Tesla has earned praised from Consumer Reports before. One version of the Model S, the P85D, earned the highest score possible, performing better on the group's tests than any other car before it. Even at that time, however, Consumer Reports expressed concerns about the Model S's reliability.
However, the Model S gained this year, improving to an average reliability rating.
Tesla did not have an immediate comment.

Dude, what else is there?Pwns wrote:The article gushes over the rating and mainly talks about speed and acceleration…why should I care about that?
How much are you paying for it between financing and insurance and maintenance and replacing/fixing parts that may be hard to find? How reliable is it?
How old ARE you anyway?

My round trip to my metro station is 174 miles, so the Tesla has that range covered theoretically. I know a guy with a Nissan Leaf though, and the range is impacted by cold temperatures, wind, accessory usage, and driving like Flaggy. Getting stranded on Eastern Shore MD would suck da balls. I'm gonna wait and follow the Model 3 forums and see when to pull the trigger. Another help would be if they built a supercharging station in Annapolis. Right now, the closest three to me are Salisbury MD, Newark DE, and Bethesda MD, and none are on my route in case I run low.
Well that explains your sour disposition....

it will happen. You'll get used to it John. Another thing I learned: When their sales cross a certain threshold buyers will no longer get a tax credit when they buy a Tesla; and they are close to crossing that threshold.Tesla lost $889 million last year -- a record -- partially due to new model development costs and partially due to construction costs associated with its Nevada-based battery Gigafactory. Tesla has lost money for each of the last eight years. As of late, shareholders have been punishing the company's stock price, which closed at $150.43 Thursday, up nearly 5 percent but well off its 52-week high of $286.65 in July.
They may be in trouble. We'll see.
Meanwhile let me know when somebody produces an electric vehicle that will go something like 1500 miles on a single charge when you're driving at normal highway speeds, etc. and I'll definitely be interested. But this stuff of going a couple of hundred miles on a charge just wouldn't fit for me.

Tesla S Falls Short of Luxury Rivals on Tougher Safety Test
Tesla has long promoted its cars as among the safest available. After its Model S electric sedan was reviewed by the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2013, Tesla said it had received the best safety rating of any car ever tested.
But a more rigorous safety review has reached a different conclusion: that the Tesla S is not on a par with several of its luxury rivals.

Frankly I think that if you buy a Tesla, in most cases, what you're doing is making a statement. Which is fine if you want to do that. But if you're just talking about convenience and cost in most cases you're not going to buy one.

I'd been hearing reports on this and wondered if this thread would move back to the top. And the reports I heard are pretty consistent with the headline of the article. It's not because Tesla has done well. It's because people are seeing it as a potential big winner in the future.Chizzang wrote:Tesla passed Ford and General Motors in market capitalization

It's a gamble, I think. But I guess that's what investment is about.
What's interesting to me is that this happened in the midst of a situation in which a new Presidential Administration would reasonably be expected to draw back on some of the policies that have given electric car makers a boost.

Not suprising considering GM came out of bankruptcy 7+ years ago, and Ford & GM hamstrung themselves by agreeing to the newer tougher CAFE standards set under the Obama admin in 2011 that call for 54.5 miles per gallon for cars and light-duty trucks by model year 2025 (which is a boost for TESLA). With a higher percent of the Big 3's sales being larger pickups, SUVs, muscle cars, minivans, & a smaller percent being small cars, the Big 3 having a harder time competing with the foreign companies.JohnStOnge wrote:I'd been hearing reports on this and wondered if this thread would move back to the top. If the 2025 CAFE standards are rolled back, which it looks like Trump will do (Big 3 have no chance of meeting it), I bet you'll see a jump in GM & Ford's market capitalization..
